Getting stiffed by an insurance company

Hey friends, what would you value your 91.5-93 W250 5 speed for?
These bozo's think my truck is only worth $3700. We all know you can replace one for that.

I would suggest you do a survey on E-Bay, Craigslist Kijiji to get an idea of pricing not just in your area but other area's as well and take that information to your insurance agent.
I know here in BC if you can find them they range anywhere from 4-9,000.00 depending on condition mileage options etc.

I had the exact same problem when I went through this a few years ago. Had to fight with them and my adjuster was... Well... I won't say how I feel about her on here but she was out to screw me and save the insurance company a buck.

Had to fight for it and at the end of the day only got about $500 more than what they were saying it was worth.

Also check NADA, KellyBlueBook, and Edmonds. When I bought my W350 5spd almost 10years ago. It was only valued at 5k and thats what I paid. I cant see them going up in value in the three sources I mentioned but, the've definitely gone up in private sales.

Tell them to find you an equally nice replacement vehicle, and if you approve, cover shipping to you. The insurance is supposed to repair (or replace) the damage that occurred.

Oh, and they can pay for your rental while you wait for it.

If you are paying insurance for another vehicle, you can see if you can get an agreed value policy from Hagerty or other classic car insurer. There was a recent thread where we talked about our rigs as classic vehicles and they are. You just have to have a garage, shed or other storage for it and another vehicle with full coverage on it. It is really inexpensive too...Mark

You need to add a stated value rider I believe, at least that's how it used to be.

I had my truck appraised about a year ago. They said it was worth about $11,000. When I called my insurance, they said... "so what? we're giving you book value if something happens."

So... make sure your insurance company is willing to accept appraisals if indeed you go that route. Mine, being registered commercially, doesn't pay.

Trouble is he is fighting with someone else's insurance company.

I will never deal with Nationwide again after the way they did me on that Chevy.

You don't have to ever deal with the other guy's insurance company, you just make a claim on your own insurance and let them fight it out. With agreed value, you and the company have already agreed on the insured value on the car and if it is totaled, that is how much you get. I have had Hagerty for classic cars for years, still do, It is well worth a check. For giggles, I am going to their their and get a quote for my truck, we'll see what happens...Mark

Hagerty Quote

Well, I just got off Hagerty's site and they will insure my truck for 10k, for 365 dollars a year. That is based on where I live (Phoenix) and how old I am (58). 10 k was the MINIMUM they would insure it for. I may have to put my Range Rover as my primary vehicle and get classic car, agreed value insurance on my truck...Mark

Nationwide is horrible. When my neighbor backed out of her driveway and hit the back of my Tundra while i was driving down the road they tried saying i was 15% at fault. I then got to speak with manager. Something about the agent would no longer talk to me because of the words i choose to call him. I then filed a complaint with the state about their, Nationwides, practices after the manager specifically told me they do not care how many state laws their person violates in order to cause the accident they will never find their drivers 100% at fault They then recommended i sue the neighbor for the cost they didn't want to cover.

I fought with them for two weeks before finally settling on them covering 85% of the damages but i got to use the body shop of my choice to do the repairs. I ended up with a nice powder coated Fab Four rear bumper and only paid for the shipping. ; )

Rant over: Present them reciepts of any mods you have on the truck. If they won't pay for them tell them you are keeping those parts. My agent recommended i give her a list of all my stuff and i update it when i change something. She assured me that in the event of an accident where it gets totaled i would get paid for the mods or get to keep them.

These insurance companies should be non-profit and regulated like utility companies and in addition all executive and management salaries should be regulated. And should not be allowed to make any political campaign contributions. Then, the world would be a better place.

Thanks for the replies. State Farm is going by what either KBB or NADA says. The problem is, their "value" doesn't reflect what these trucks are actually selling for in AK. Both establishments must be powerjoke fans. I sent them local classified adds for the few trucks that are currently available to show them what they are selling for. If we can't come to an agreement, then I will go after their insured.

I have state farm.. I forgot what my truck was insured for. I want to say 5K. I bought a few W250s in awesome shape and I don't think I spent over 3K on them. That was several years ago.. now you can jump on ebay and they're selling for 20K+ and most of it is so these guys aren't stuck with this new DPT system.

I think that 10K quote is a good one. The engine alone I feel is worth 4K.
