Getting ready to rebuild my front end (91 W250)

Just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row.

I think I know what parts I need:

Brakes: Rebuild/replace upon inspection
(2x) Front Axle U-Joints, don't have PN's yet.
(2x) Rancho RS5111 - Rancho 5000 Series Shocks
(2x) Inner Hub Seal
(2x) 4WDFactory Kingpin Repair Kits
(1x) 7/8 inch hex wrench from 4WDFactory

I'm a little muddled after the weekend, and I'm not 100% sure if I want to do tie rod ends and the like yet, but I figured I'd throw it out there and see if anyone had any suggestions for me.

Thanks!

damon

if you really want to go all out, inner axle seals. Requires removal of carrier.

Yeah, I'd prefer not to, actually...I guess we'll see what the axles look like when I pull them.

If the king pins look fine then don't bother replacing them. If you have to then you'll need a 6 mile long cheater bar to get them off.

See my new thread on how to do this. Both of my upper king pins were bad and needed to be replaced. The first upper I used the heat, cool, pb blaster then 8' breaker, it worked. On the second, I just used the 8' breaker and it worked, soooo, with enough leverage, the other stuff is not necessary. That said, Mine was not rusted in any way...Mark

I don't want to jinx you or anything but on all of my 60's the first time I pulled the axle out the inner seals would start leaking soon after that. If you are gonna already have all the knuckles and axles out then the carrier isn't to much more work.

Well, I just bought 2 new u joints for the front axle, 2 new tie rod ends, 2 king pin kits and a really big allen wrench.

$350 later, and I guess I'm in for a really good time.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about...my driver's side kingpin wasn't even finger tight.

LOL...I knew something felt loose.

guess you didn't need an 8 ft cheater bar then? How did it get loose, I wonder? Or was it never tightened in the first place? good thing you checked them...Mark

I dunno...but she's been sounding like a bad ball joint for a long time...maybe since I got the truck...kind of pinging every now and again.

This whole job wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't such a friggin mess.

Well...now I'm screwed.

4wdfactory didn't include my 7/8 inch hex tool. So, my truck is torn apart, and I've no way to put it back together again.

What started out as a good day working on the ol' girl went sour on me yesterday.

So, I'm tearing into the front end. I have 2 deliveries coming, on the UPS truck...

1. Tie rod ends, u joints
2. kingpin rebuild kits and giant 7/8 hex wrench

So, I set an old bimini top up to get myself out of the sun and start in.

Things come apart smoothly...even the upper kingpin, which was clearly my problem all along, wasn't hand tight and comes right out.

Well, that turns out to be a mixed blessing, but I digress...

Things are going smoothly, but at one point I realize that my draglink needs to be replaced, and that I didn't order that.

So, now it's like 9:30AM and I call the local parts store...they say, 'no problem! We can have it here by noon'.

So, I keep working. Tear-down goes swimmingly and I get it all apart.

At 11:00 I decide to go on a run. I need to hit sears to replace a breakr bar and a 1/2 inch ratchet that were killed by a Honda axle nut in a clutch job I did a few weeks ago.

The parts store says the driver is running late...come back at 1. Ok. I goof off and go back at one. He's still not there. I leave my phone number and go home.

The part does come in around 2, but they're open till 6...but, again, I digress...

I get home to find my packages. tie rod ends...check. U joints...check. kingpin kits...check. Wrench...nowhere to be seen.

So, now my truck is apart with no hopes of being put together. I call 4wdfactory frantically, explaining that this is my daily driver and I have work on Monday. They tell me that the wrench shipped usps and the kits ups. They tell me that the package should arrive today (yesterday).

It doesn't, of course...so now the truck is just sitting there. Parts are all cleaned and ready to go back together...just can't do it until that damned wrench shows up.

...and that's just the driver's side! Grrrrr

Had to vent...I've got so many projects piling up right now, I can't believe this one is going to drag on past the weekend!
