getrag trans problems help needed!!
I have a 92 w250 with 80k on it and the trans stuck in 5th gear last night the shifter it self is in nuetral but the tranny is stuck in 5th, any ideas will the newer 6spds fit or will the nv4500 fit
its going to be cheaper to fix the getrag. Your looking at $1500 to swap a 5 speed NV4500. NV5600 is going to run $2000 on the cheap side just for the trans and who knows what your getting or how long it will last. I've researched and am still thinking...might be going with a medium duty truck trans like a rr6610 of fuller fso6406a. But would be same ish money but much much stronger than the NV, getrag, or the newer Daimler 6 speed.
My cousin's truck had an episode of doing the same thing.
He had the top off of it a dozen or more times, trying to fix the shift-forks.
He ended up ordering an entire new top assembly from Standard Transmission or Blumenthols, one or the other.
It has been probably three years since and he has had no more problems.
If you are lucky, there is a removable floor-hump under your carpet; some had them, some didn't.
If you do not have the removable hump, then it is best to cut/fabricate one, instead of dropping the transmission.
Once you have made the floor-hump removable, then the top of the transmission can be accessed easily from above --- inside the cab.
well as luck would have it it dont have the removable cover at the moment but soon will
also looked for a new top cover with the shifter on line with no luck is this a dealer only part or can parts stores get them

Common parts-stores aren't gonna have much luck finding anything for the Getrag.
Forget looking at Chrysler/Dodge also, as they considered the entire transmission assembly as an un-servicable disposable unit.
There are a few suppliers of parts for the Getrag, Standard Transmission and Blumenthols being the two prominent ones; I am sure there are probably a few others.

My first question is wondering if you have any oil in the trans? Do the hump conversion yourself, doesnt take much time to do that. Pull the shifter top off and see what you have inside. The only problem with reinstall is making sure the shift top is in the same position that the trans is in.
You may try these guys, never dealt with them, but I have herd they carry parts for the getrag http://www.zbag.com

"Getrag" is said as it looks, "Gehtrag".
As far as swapping top covers to "fix" the problem, with 80,000 miles on it, I seriously doubt that swapping a new topcover on it will solve the problem.
Back when Chrysler was warrantying them, they lasted right about the mileage yours is at, usually less, but 80,000 miles is "high" miles on an OEM one.
Most people didn't know to run them overfull back then.
I have yet to find a post-1980 Dodge with a removable center floor.
It'd be a homemade deal, or an earlier cab that's been transplanted, and I can spot those by the heater box set-up.
Just pull the tranny the conventional way.
By the time you're done modifying the floor, just to find you're going to have to rebuild it anyway, you'll be pulling your hair out and ready to recycle it.
GOOD jackstands, plus a few hours with those super clean, rustfree Texas bolts and it'll all be out where you can actually inspect it, instead of taking a shot in the dark.
Word of advice:
If the input wobbles, rebuild it.
Mark.

ok thanks for all the great advice, as wierd as it seems the next day i was messing with it and the shifter went back itno the wright position and now it shifts into all gears im just worried it will stick again and not come out. i been surching the internet for nv4500 and i think i might as well upgrade in stead of rebuilding the getrag so my question now is will the nv4500 bolt right up and will it have the throwout berring in on the same side as the getrag
