GETRAG SHIFT STUB PROBLEMS - help!

Just finished installing a getrag in my 93. I put trans in gear to facilitate rotating to align with clutch plate. Trans is in. I can't get shift stub in the right position. It appears that replacing the stub is is easy when truck is in neutral, however when in gear you have to push the bottom of the stub on an angle such that it depresses the detents that lock the shift forks in position. It wants to go in the neutral position and won't shift. Any ideas on how to get past this?

I'm not shore that i'm unerstanding you right but,you need to make shore that all the shift rails are in line(in neutral)before you try to install the stub shaft or you might be puting the shifter in one that is is in neutral and an ether fork may be in gear not alowing you to shift when installed.
that snap ring is a real ........ well if you have a friend to help,3 or 4 hand make it a lot easer to keep it held down long enuff to get the snap ring in before it moves!!

Reach down the shifter hole with a long stout screwdriver and align the three forks in the neutral position. The two buttons on the outer forks should be centered and align with the gap in the center fork.

My problem may have been misdiagnosed - I pulled trany , pulled top cover and put trans in neutral and forks in the top cover in neutral position and replaced top cover. I had a friend rotate shaft by hand as I shifted (on a trans jack). After changing the position of the shifter thru 2 or 3 gears the Trans locked in gear and shift handle would not return to neutral or shift. I previously thought this might be related to the positioning of the shift stub as indicated above. I tried a top cover off another trans. and performed the same - all appears fine. Shifter is smooth with positive engagement. The problem appears to be in the aluminum cover assembly. ***?

It sounds to me like it could possibly be one of the spring-loaded centering plungers let go and sliding between the forks, preventing the shifter from being able to move.

Ask someone more smarter before tearing into it on my say so.

I have the truck back together with the old top assembly and it runs/shifts great. I examined the top cover which malfunctioned and the only discernable feature out of the norm is the plug on of the shift rails looks like it is walking out (rear exterior of the case). These do not serve as stops - do they? Also, can the reverse indicator interfere if in too deep? I am not sure if the one supplied was correct.
