Getrag growl at low speeds
Getrag growl at low speeds
I understand that I should keep my RPMs up even in everyday driving so as to not lug the Getrag, but does this also apply in no load situations when you are in first? I know a lot of people don't even use first, but it does come in handy when you wanna go slow. What is the minimum RPM is should be cruising around in at those kind of speeds? Does your guys' transmissions make noises if you let it idle? If I let the clutch out in first and let her idle, my tranny makes a weird growling sound, even though there is almost no load. Every one or two seconds it will make a weird grinding sound as if something is hitting as it turns over. It is a different kind of sounds from the oen it would make if I came up to a stop sign in 4th and clutched to late.I remedy this by always going at least 1000-1200 RPM. but sometimes it would be nice to let her idle.
What RPM do you guys drive around in when you are navigating busy parking lots? Do you ever let the engine idle in first and cruise around like that? I have 3.54s and sometimes it would be really nice to go that speed when there is a lot of traffic in a busy parking lot.

My truck has 3.07s and I let it idle around in 1st, the only rattles I get are from going into 5th before 50mph.
Sounds like you may be getting some clutch rattle? I'm no expert on the symptoms of the Getrag, so someone else will have to give you some specifics.

The clutch is relatively new, only about 6k miles on it. The transmission was pulled and rebuilt at the same time. What exactly is clutch rattle? It doesn't slip or anything like that. Thanks for the input!

the trans in the 93 did this if you lugged it a little bit, or at like 30-35 in 4th gear. worse as you give it more fuel.
it turned out it was the input shaft rattlng up and down in the retainer (the shaft that the throwout bearing slides on)

So would that be a problem at the pilot bushing/bearing, the race/bearing built into the input itself, or a problem with the retainer mounting?
Potentially any of the three?
I rebuilt my 'rag, but I didn't put a new input in it. I've regretted it ever since, now that I realize the race built into them is prone to wearing.

Mine does the same exact thing when I let it idle in gear while creeping in bumper to bumper traffic. The transmission works perfect and shifts great. I don't worry about it. When you let it idle through a parking lot and creep along at a few mile per hour (or bumper to bumper traffic)the load is fluctuating in and out slightly. Kind of bouncing back and forth just a bit. As soon as I apply any fuel it goes away. My manual 6 speed in another truck did exactly the same thing and there were no issues with that transmission either.

That is clutch chatter, usually caused by an oil soaked disk, although there are other reasons. My 90 easily starts out in 2nd and I sometimes forget about 1st all together...Mark

It sounds like "Gear rollover"
Ford diesels do that when you convert them to a single mass flywheel, which is what we have.
I think it's called Gear rollover. my truck does it in reverse.

I never use 1st gear either. With my 4.10 gearing, 1st gear is good for up to about 2 mph, maybe 3 mph max
. I only use it occassionally when towing and taking off from a start up a slight grade. It is great for creaping in bumper to bumper traffic through. FYI, my clutch doesn't chatter like that either.

Gear roll over is normal. My 7.3 with a single mass LUK clutch is really loud. People turn their head as I roll into 1st gear in a parking lot. The ZF manual trans in Ford 7.3 trucks makes much louder gear roll over noise compared to my Getrag. If you lug a ZF trans just a bit going into 1st gear, it literally sounds like the trans is coming out of the truck.
