General issues with a 92 w250
I found a 92 w250 for sale that I would really like to buy, but I don't know the more common problems to look out for. He has two ads for it the oldest one says 3750.00 the newest on says 4500.00. He says that the only thing wrong with it is the frame is pretty rusty. He stated that the engine was the 12v cummins. I remember reading somewhere that a certain series of engine for Dodge was prone to a major problem with the timing chain/retaining pin, or the engine block cracking. I thought it was for early to mid 90's models. Although I've been wrong before. Anyway, please let me know what I should look for before I buy. Thanks. Jason
its the killer dowel pin (kdp) 89-02 its an easy fix ,the pin that holds the timing gear cover in line works its way out and falls in the the gear train .the trucks are great but with any 20+ year old truck it will have issues ,just look it over real good. its needs to be in great shape for $4500
For $4500 it better be in near mint shape. With a rusty frame I think it's not going to be in tip top shape.
Mileage and options will help determine the price as well. Go take a look, snap some pics, get some more info and post it up for us to review.
Good luck...although my truck has been a fair amount of work so far...I love it to death! And can't believe I went this long without owning a 1st gen with a cummins!!

FWIW,
I just bought a 93 with a western plow for $4k. Plow is worth $1200 by itself.
I had to put $4k into it, including registration, tires, brakes, tune up, all gear fluids, and some interior stuff. Granted now it's super reliable, stops well, and runs great, but I still didn't take into account how much I would have to invest into it to make it safe to drive regularly.
If you know someone who knows these trucks, and is willing to look at it before purchase, or do as what others have said....such as pictures pasted here, you could be saving yourself a large amount of money by doing so. Looking back on it, I shouldn't have paid as much as I did, but it's still a good vehicle to have, and I'll make my money back next year when it snows.

Yeah, I said the same thing.... I wish I bought mine back in 93. If I had only known....
