Fuel shut on problems

I had my 92 Dodge fail to start the other night for the first time. Ended up pecking on the fuel shut off solenoid until it finally started to get it home. Had someone tell me when the injector pump starts going it put metal shavings into this shut off valve making the rubber stopper stick and the solenoid unable to do its job. Is this theory correct? Anybody else had this problem and what would the proper fixes be? Thanks for any input.

To my knowledge it has not been. I have now removed the fuel shut of solenoid and found quiet a bit of metal shavings and according to the mechanic I have spoken to the fuel pump needs rebuilding or replacing. I'm open to suggestions.

Meseems the metal chips would have to go upstream to get into the fuel shut off solenoid. Could be wrong. My problems there have always been related to getting 12V power to the terminal.

I would get a new fuel shutdown solenoid and run it and see what happens. I have never heard of metal shavings getting in the few before.
