flush and refill power steering system?

Anyone know a good way to flush as much bad power steering fluid out of the system as possible. Mine kind of looks like watery oatmeal. Kind of scary. My factory service manual does not talk about draining and refilling.

You could take bolt lines off then take the bolts off for the reservoir and take the reservoir right off but im not sure how to get it out of the power steering box. Maybe while the lines or off turn the steering wheel to one side and then the other??

I use a suction gun to get what I can out of the reservoir. Add new fluid go for a drive and use the suction gun again. Normally two or three times seem to work well for me.

you can flush it with a buddys help. Take the return off the pump and put it in a bucket. Plug the return on the res so it will hold fluid again.

Get ready with a funnel and start her up, when the wheel is turned it will dump fluid out of the return into the bucket and you will need to keep adding fresh to the res.

It is more of a PITA process but if you are particular about it it is possible to do.

yeah, i was thinking the suction gun too. Thats how we do the Macks at work, but they hold like 2 gallons of 15-40 as power steering fluid, so i would imagine this can't be as bad.

also, good idea on taking the return line off

Thanks for the ideas
