Welcome to the site! Smaller sticks. POD's suck for towing. Or, some custom EDM's that will flow the same or more than POD's yet will run cooler. They are pricey, though. Have you bumped your timing?

thought about it but heard that it only appears to lower temp that temp in cylinder is higher?

Although it is true that advanced timing is actually just moving the heat from the exhaust turbine to the combustion chamber, that is not an alltogether bad thing. Guys running POD's with daily drivers push the pump all the way to the head to get all the timing they can. Some even bump a tooth on the IP gear to get more timing. POD's seem to run much better with more timing. HOWEVER, seeing that you do tow with your rig (how heavy, by the way?) it would be wise to go a little more conservative on the timing. Still, the typical 1/8'' bump is almost a 'must do' for every 1st gen, regardless of use.

is that trailer weight or gross combined? POD's are definitely hurting you either way.

gross combined, might be a little exaggeration
goal for truck, is towing, not interested in 0 to 60 or 90 , want to be able to tow as much as I can and run up every hill at 70 mph.

smaller injectors: how small do you think I would need to go. Have thought of going back to stock.
tired of haveing to back off the throttle so much on hills when towing.
all that power isnt doing me any good when I cant step down because of egts

Given your intended use, DEFINITELY lose the POD's. For a truck that works, they give you no useable power (as you've already found out) and also negatively affect your fuel economy. Going back to the stock injectors will likely gain you 1-2 mpg empty and maybe half that towing. Have them cleaned and re-popped and start a new baseline. Also, do you have gauges? I assume the turbo is stock? A 12cm exhaust housing from an hx-35 would be a HUGE improvement as well, as you'd be moving more air for a given amount of fuel, resulting in lower egt's. Oh, where are you located? Better yet, go to the upper left hand of this page and click on 'user CP' then fill out your signature so we all know what you drive and where you're at every time you post--makes it easier to answer questions without having to look up at the original post

have pyro, boost, tach for guages
turbo is stock. Wouldn't 12 housing increase boost? worry about hg. with current set up I can easily see 35 plus boost. I try to keep boost at 30 or lower and temp 1100 max.

Between 30 and 35 is definitely the happy place for the turbo, BUT, it will take less fuel to push that same boost with a 12cm housing, so you'll be running cooler. Plus, the 12 will have a wastegate, so you'll be able to add more pedal and the wastegate will keep boost in control. It's a bit of a PITA to swap housings, but I've never known a 5speed owner with stock injectors to regret the 12cm swap. Yeah, the POD's will definitely push boost and heat into the unacceptable zone, but that will not be the case with the stockers. With the stockers back in, I can all but guarantee that the addition of the 12cm housing and some pump tweeking will give you 20% more available power to tow with as compared to the POD's/18.5cm housing combo.

thanks for the advice I will try 12 housing
do you think I could get away with slightly bigger than stock injectors, or would they make any differance towing?
with set up as it is I was thinking that I might of had more towing power before the mods.

I think you probably could. I understand the Bosch 190's are a good, clean upgrade for the late 1st gens. I had an early 1st gen and they had larger injectors stock. I ran POD's for a couple days and didn't notice a difference. Apples to oranges when compared to your stockers, though. You might try and turn your pump up a bit more with the stockers and see how you like it. I would recommend a fuel pressure gauge in order to keep and eye on the care and feeding of the injection pump, as they are sensative to fuel starvation, and low inlet pressure can cause all kinds of starting/running issues, and can eventually kill the injection pump.

First off, if your pyro probe is installed in the manifold like it should be, you should be able to run 1200-1250F all day long without hurting anything. If your probe is in the DP I would move it to the manifold, especially because you tow. I've heard a number of guys even running 1300F sustained with the probe in the manifold but I wouldn't go that high...

Rather than going to a 12cm housing I'd do a 60mm compressor upgrade (it's $225 + shipping from GDS but it doesn't leave much room to grow) or if you could pick one up for like $100-150 I'd grab an hx35. They have a 12cm gated housing and should flow a little more air than the h1c you have (again, not much room to grow for power, especially if you tow)

If things are still kinda toasty you could spend the $ on coolertubz. They will lower EGTs too. There are lots of things you can do to lower EGTs, it's just going to cost money.
Different injectors even. DDP injectors are a clean burning injector I'd recommend them to anyone but they aren't cheap. If at all possible I'd not turn the IP up. It has dramatic effects on EGTs.
You could always go to a turbo with a true 4" outlet too. Something like an hx40 (which a lot of guys don't recommend for guys running the 5spd) or an he351cw. Again it's all in how much money you want to spend.

this is true. I've heard of guys even getting higher then that too. But we all know there isn't any real immediate damage if it's only for 12-14 seconds. Like it's not going to melt the engine down or the turbo. Not like 1300F for a couple hours sustained. I wouldn't go that high for that long though. I'd feel comfortable running 1250 all day long so long as the probe is in the manifold.
