Smile Finally A New Clutch

Well I'm finally getting a new clutch tomorrow and for you Arizona people it will be at Tri City Transmission, so I will tell you how good they are. Is there anything I should look for when they get done? They said that it will be a 2 day job so it will have to spend the night there, unfortunatly. I'm a bit nervous about someone working on it, because it will be the first time someone else has touched it since I have had it. Any advice on what to look for would be great.

Thanks

2 DAYS ???

Talk about slow, I say watch the final price, you might get sticker shock.

You are looking at about 4 hours tops. Plus the time to have the flywheel
machined that's another 30 minutes. Maybe I need to move to Ari$onia
and just do clutch jobs

my $0.02

The guys is putting in an OEM sachs clutch. I don't know why it will take 2 days seemed pretty rediculous to also. As far as a transmission shop is concered I don't know who is good and who isn't, but my dad heard some good things about this place. Thats all I have to go off of unfortunatly The guy last I talked to him said 500-800 dollars, OUCH

They should not need your truck for 2 days to do a clutch R+R unless they need to make big money off of you. Keep a close watch on them and tell them you want all the original parts back. I would make sure i was there to see everything that comes out they should have all the old stuff out in an hour and the laying on the ground if they know anything at all. Good luck

This is great input. The OEM clutch is a Sachs correct. I told you wrong the guy said that they put in Luke clutches, has anyone ever hear about these? Well the problem is that they are not open on the weekends and My Dad is bringing it down on his way to work and I am driving his truck to school. Either way I will not be able to be there . I am starting to get a little nervous Keep the advice comming. I'm starting to think about reschedualing.

You don't want to downgrade to a 12" Luk clutch. That is what the dealer and most shops will install in our trucks, the so called 'stock' Luk clutch. But we got the mighty 13" Sachs clutch as OEM back in the day. 94+ 5 speeds received the 12" Luk clutch. What is wrong with your clutch now? Tell them you want a South Bend 13" clutch or a genuine Sachs. Order the clutch from South Bend, then pay the shop to install.

Yes, as Bill said, run from that Luk clutch as fast as you can. Spend your $$ on a good South Bend clutch, buy me a plane ticket to AZ and I'll put it in for free in your driveway!

Ok let me get this straight, a sachs clutch was the OEM back in the day, and the Luk clutch is the so called up graded clutch. Well I am not taking the clutch in today due to lack of research. Can the dealer get a sachs clutch? The reason I ask is I am going to try and call the dealer to see what they want for the job. Isn't dealer time per hour around $130. What is the best way to find a good transmission shop? I am in the dark with this

Haha Thanks G1625S, I appreciate that.

Peter at South Bend Clutch can get the original Sachs unit. I'm sure other places can, but so many folks on this site have had great experiences with Peter, I really don't see any reason to shop around. Plus, when the dealer looks up your truck, the computer will likely spit out the 'upgraded' clutch anyway, and telling them you want the old style will be like running into a brick wall....good luck with whatever you do.

I think the clutch debate also centers around intended use for truck. Also as much as South bend is the end all of clutches, they are usually much higher in price than other clutches. Personally, I'd love to have a Con OFE but i bought a new clutch and had it installed for what a Con OFE costs.

Not so sure on that one. What kind of 'new' clutch did you get? The 'upgrade' style is only a couple hundred bucks, so with install, you're looking at a bit less than a grand--sound about right? A new Sachs clutch runs about 650-700 last I looked, where a SB conOFE is 4 and change and a conFE is closer to a grand, I think...just trying to compare apple to apples.

Bottom line is that Dodgerdoob is right---buy the clutch that fits your vehicle. For the majority of 1st genners, that's the original Sachs unit. Like Dave says, any 12'' clutch is a downgrade, weather it be a LUK or any of the 12'' offerings from SB. While the 12'' SB's maybe an upgrade for the 2nd gen guys, remember that we had better equipment from the factory

Well the primary use of my truck is driving around from point a to b, and I don't have a large trailer for towing although I may tow a little, if I have to. The truck is plane jane, with mods in the distant future. I talked to the guy and he said that if I bring it to them when they open than they may be able to get it done in a day. Even though the LUK is a downgrade is it still a cast iron clutch? I want to make sure that I get a cast iron clutch. The guys says that they don't use stamped steel clutches at all. I wanted to double check with you guys to make sure that the LUK is a cast iron. Problem is I need to get to school and my dads other car is down at the moment. So my truck has to get done asap, probably going to take it in tomorrow. Thanks guys

Well my dad took the truck in today and they won't be able to get it up till tonight. They said due to the weight that they need their heavy duy truck life, which already has a truck on it. They also said that they will start it first thing tomorrow. Well hopfully I don't get screwed . Wish me luck
