Filler Plug In Top Of Getrag

I read that it is good to overfill the Getrag by 1 to 1-1/2 quarts.

Many accomplish this by removing the shifter and pouring through the top.

My Getrag is in the shop being rebuilt.

Has anyone drilled/tapped a filler plug hole in the top of the transmission to add lubricant through??

I have even considered extending a filler-neck through the floorboard.

I would appreciate some input on this.

Ive never owned a gutbag trans but if there like most the other truck sticks you can remove the nice floor boot inside the cab and looking at the top of the trans where the shifter is you should be able to push down on the tin looking shifter retain and turn it counterclockwise about 1/6 turn and pull the whole shifter out. Dump yer xtra oil and put the shifter back in. This would be lots better than drilling the floor board and xtnding the fill tube up. Just a idea for you.

I fill mine to the line, then use a suction gun and get a full load of fluid and blow it in, then quickly put the plug in.

The Getrag has a hard to get snap-ring and a powerful spring below it that have to be dealt with, let alone having to remove inner and outer boots, then a boot on the top of the transmission itself held on by a hose clamp.

It ain't as easy as the push down and turn caps on most transmissions out there.

I was trying to avoid getting the fluid bath that results from force pumping in the extra fluid.

I have a street elbow threaded in the fill hole and pointed straight up. I can pour in a little over 4 qts. sitting in the driveway, for the rest I drive to a parking lot with a slope and park so the passenger side is high. I'm not sure if a 4X4 has enough room to do it this way.

At the local ACE hardware they had a Lubrimatic brand pump made to go into a quart container (looks like a large hand cleaner bottle pump). Attached to that is a hose with a threaded fitting on the other with an M10 thread. It is made for lubricating outboards I guess.

Anyway that M10 thead is the same as the PTO cover bolts, so I just screw out the top bolt on one side, thread the pump in, and pump in 5qts of oil. Even with 5qts it does not get upto the top cover bolts so you can thread the bolt back in without it leaking on youl

Back to your question though.... I suppose you could pour 5qts in it with the top off and sitting at about the angle it would be in the truck (tail of trans somewhat lower than the front) and then cut a hole in a PTO cover in the correct spot and have a pipe threaded bung welded in it.

Thanks for the info on the hand pump. Ace is across the street from the shop so I will check it out.
