Fan Shaft Bearing

I noticed a growl coming from the grill area last week and decided to take advantage of a warm January day and investigate. The fan shaft bearing was dry and has a little excessive end play. None of the part stores in town have a part or part number. NAPA wanted to sell the whole assy. but didn't have it in stock. I pulled the bearing, removed the seals and cleaned and regreased it. It is an NTN bearing DF0766LUA Double row angular seating sealed ball bearing. I tried a search on the internet but found nothing. Where can I find a replacement bearing and not have to pay for the research and development?

Re: Bearing #

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's what I found out. Hope this helps!
My fan support #3921689 (still on truck and running well) has been superceded to a
#3923004 for which Cummins wants $262.55 (our cost) for the whole unit.
They did give me a break down on part #'s and it looks like the Cummins part #3910739 is for the ball bearing. They are very proud of it - $113.55

Well, I checked into our Komatsu cross over #'s and found that we stock the same bearing for
about $75.00.

One other thing I could do is to go into inventory and actually look and see who makes the bearing and what that particuliar # is, for using as a cross reference. I can't believe that it is that expensive.

I guess it'll be important to see what fan support # you have and see if they match for this info. to be any good to you.

Hope this helps !

The above is a pm that I got a while back from Jive55 (thank you) I hope this helps a little.

Michael

Be sure when you replace the fan hub bearing that you use a shop press. Do not try to install the bearing with something that could side load the bearing such as a hammer and drift. I have seen at least 3 fail because of improper installation due to this. They all lasted a couple of months.

I don't own a shop press but a 4 inch vise worked very well. I have over a hundred miles on the relubed bearing so far. It still growls but doesn't overheat. It is Monday morning and I am looking for a new bearing. I sure hope I can find a cheaper substitute. It is anything fancy. It is a double row angular seat medium duty sealed bearing.

Boatnik, I got mine from a local bearing supply last year and I think it was around 30.00 buck's.they had to order it out of Texas. If you have a bearing supplier around they might be a little cheaper than dodge.

Timb, good to hear from you. I ordered a new DF0766LUA bearing from a local indusdrial supply house Monday for 45 bucks. It should be here Wed. When I get it, I will pull the bracket and bring it to work where I have a fully equipt machine shop at my disposal.

Got the new bearing in Tuesday. Took off early and installed it that evening. Piece of cake. 1/4 inch air ratchet, 10 mm socket and short extension. 3/8 drive breaker bar to move the belt tensioner. Large vise grips to loosen fan. I hated to do that but I don't have a thin wrench that fits. I had the old bearing out in 30 minutes. Installation of the new bearing took a little longer because I wanted to make sure I did not apply pressure to the ***** while pressing the bearing home. The 2-9/16 inch rear axle socket made a good sleeve and installation tool along with an old Snap-on bearing set. 1/2 inch impact tightened the retainer bolt and reinstallation was in the reverse order. THe hardest thing about the whole job was remembering how the belt snakes thru all those sheaves. I actually enjoy working on that old engine. What am I saying............ "work" is a four letter word!

Resurecting an old thread I know. I can't find the NTN DF0766LUA bearing online. I did however get linked to this tread. Locally Dodge wants $260.00, Cummins wants $210.00, and the local bearing supply wants $125.00. Can anyone set me up with one of those $40.00 - $45.00 bearings?

Thanks
John

Try: www.applied.com They are the holding company (I think) for Applied industries and that is who I got the bearing from. They are in Canada as well.

got an easy trick i learned from and old time mech. who i am sure would be in his eights if he is still alive. anyway any bearing you want to replace you pretty much as said want to push on the outer race. if you have the old bearing gut it out take to bench grinder and grind the outside of the race down enough so it will not hang up on the housing you are going to press the new bearing into. then use it to install the new bearing . we used to weld a shaft on them a foot long to drive the bearings in. wear your saftey glasses. i replaced my brothers fan support bearing on a second gen cummins seems to me it was around a 100 bucks. don't think i have the old bearing around for a number. my parts guy couldn't find anything else at the time and he has been pretty good about looking.

This works well, ...I've used this a few times and stopped pressing before the old race started into the hole, but trimming the old one would allow you to "bottom" the new one, ...slick!

When I replaced mine a local bearing shop was able to get one for about $75. But it is an OEM number and the distributor was a little leary about selling to a non Dodge distributor. Same bearing at Dodge was $250!

Good thing that I do some regular business with the bearing guy.
