They will swap between 92 and 93.
the 89-91 ones have their own wiring and their own plug, I think "tdimark" still has a few of new in box kits to install a tach in a 89-91 truck

They were NEVER factory installed.
There is a 1990-'91 version that the factory dash harness in those 2 years DID support, but it typically also had to have the crank sensor as part of the package.
IMHO, they are not worth more than $200, "NOS" or otherwise, because you can get a really, really nice aftermarket one for that much.

Mark Nixon,
So if I could find one for my 92, it would just simply plug in to the existing harness, somewhere around the sreering column, nothing else needed? Also, how does the tach mount, I assume you have to drill holes in the dashboard?
Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
Yes, there would need to be holes drilled.
The tach plug is located as you mentioned, near the column, it's a 4 pin black plug on '92-'93.
The harness actually un-screws from the back of the tach, after you remove the rear case.
The manufacturer and Dodge were even thinking in that, because there are letters next to each terminal to correspond to the wire color that is screwed into that terminal.
Be careful if you have to remove one, as I have pulled a couple where (apparently) the holes through the dash are smaller than the rings on the back of the tach.
The only thing I can come up with for that is that the actual harness included with the tach (package) is all in pieces, with the under-dash connector's wires not installed in the connector housing.
It takes a pin or a similar object to undo the wires from this connector.
If you have to do this, be sure to make a note of which wires go into that connector.

Thanks Mark. I know better tach's are out there but I would rather have the "factory/dealer installed" one if I can find one. I don't like the pods on the dash (my 93 has that), and I don't like guages hanging under the dash.
Thanks again,
Bill

Non I/C setup for "dealer" tach on early 1st Gens:

Bill, there is also a great write up with installation info on the factory 92/93 tach connections at 1stgen.org.
I have read it in the past, just didn't have time to dig it up now

Sootnsmoke,
Thanks, I'm on 1stGen.org from time to time. I'll look for it. I don't have the tach yet, I see them for sale now and then but wasn't sure how they operated. My truck is completly stock so it's not like I really need one, just like the way they look. Better that an aftermarket I think.
