Exhaust Question...3" or 4"
Exhaust Question...3" or 4"
I have a friend that works at a local exhaust shop that will set me up with a dual 3" stainless exhaust system, with single chamber Raven muffers, all hardware and labor for $325. he is going to run a y-pipe from the stock downpipe out to after the rear tires. My question is, will this flow as well as a 4" system? Also, should I be concerned with back pressure and will the mufflers work?
thanks

I was going to have my ex shop do min but he could only bend the pipe with the crimp type, he said the the mandrell bender, was somthing rediculas like.....400,000 or some thing like that so, it would have to be a big muffler shop just to have the eqipment
Just my .02 worth.....I would thing that a 4" mandrel bent systom would out flow a 3" dual, crimp bent, ex system.
Duals are for gassers. www.bigexhaust.com has a 4" kit with muffler for that same price. Pass on the sissy 3".

Is your truck 4 wheel drive? if so how did you get that monster thru the t-case and cross member?
It is going to be mandrel bent. It is being done at one of the "name brand" companies. One of those "bring it in after hours and have it done by a friend" kind of deals. They definately have the capabilities. Unfortunately, I am required in Maine to have mufflers, so a straight pipe is out of the question. It will be set up properly, I am just more interested in flow capabilities.
My truck has a 3" down pipe then I make a reducer from 3" to 5" which is about right under the passenger floor board then 5" stainless straight back then a 45 degree and comes out right behind the duallys at the 45 on the passenger side sounds exactly like a 18 wheeler going down the road. I want a jake brake!!!

I think if the y is smooth the the muffler are good. There would not be to much difference. If you calculate the volume over 1 in there is about 2 cubic inch diffence with the the dual being larger. So even if it is a crimp type bender I think it would be close 6's.
If you do it tell be how it works out.

Don't pay for a high dollar system! A "GOOD" shop can run a 4" straight from the downpipe back and install a 03' up stock 4" tail pipe and put a 5" tip on it. Great sound and less than 1/2 the cost. ($150. or so in this area) And no one can tell that you did not pay big bucks for it!
Don't use the duals and the 5" is WAY TOO much for an older low hp engine.
05' 4" straight and 6" tip (way too loud) 100hp Dr.Performance module, K&N intake kit.
97' 12V 3 1/2" straight K&N filter good sound GREAT FUEL MILEAGE (22mpg in town and hwy with 226-k miles).
93" 12V just like I stated on top on listing. And it sounds great and its getting over 20 with an automatic....
Less than $600. total in all 3 systems!

'Good' and 'Most' shops are far and few between. Not too many shops that can bend or even have 4" in stock. 'Most' shops will only have/do 3".
Good one, older low hp engine
. I like that quote.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I would love to run a straight pipe, or stacks even (with those I lose the use of my cap though) The shop I am working with doesn't have the capabilities to bend 4" pipe. That is why I am looking to flow more exhaust through dual 3" pipes. Is going dual bad, or is it just an opinion on what people like? Has anyone fabbed up a way to run stacks through an aluminum bed cap? Might be kinda neat?
