downshifting woes
downshifting woes
especially when the tranny is cold I often double de-clutch between 2 and 3 and 3 and 4 on the way up
but when I'm coming off the highway and want to downshift from 5 to 4 it doesn't matter how many times I de-clutch, all I get is GRIND
I can get from 4 to 3 at about 25-30, but it's not too smooth
going from 3 to 2 is also practically impossible without some brake application
any thoughts?

when you go to down shift to forget to throp the throttle a little bit....when your double clutching.....it works....pull it outta gear let the clutch out rev it up alil bit and push the clutch in and she should slide right into gear
what's involved with repairing the synchros?
pull the tranny and refresh it with a master rebuild kit. I usually get all My parts from Zbag bc they are excellent at customer service but I found also good prices a 4x4 quad website yet they talk about the getrag as if it is just a piece of junk.
I had some of tha same issues with my ol goat. I was havin to go from 2nd to 5th. I found thar if I just take it outta gear Ans wiggle tha stick back n forth I was then able to downshift...

+1 Just slide it out of gear, give it a rev, clutch in and put it in gear. Sounds like your syncros are completely worn out or broken.
I don't even bother to downshift to fourth any longer, but I have to improve the timing of goosing the throttle between first and second de-clutching to get into 4th on the way up...I am grinding at least 50% of the time
makes me wonder how the old-timers could run through gears 2 and higher WITHOUT using the clutch
you're all prolly right about the synchros, but I just don't have the money for a tranny rebuild right now, I already have WAY TOO MUCH money in this truck

No offense but it is worthless to spend any money on a truck if You can't drive it comfortably, specially a manual tranny its aggravating in short order and also a master rebuild kit would cost around $350-$500 maybe and it is far less than $10k.

Just to be clear, if your transmission is in good condition it is not a good idea to float through the gears without the clutch right? Not to steal the thread, but if the synchros are in good shape then it wears then it isn't good to do this right?
The way it was explained to me is if it ain't grinding you ain't hurting anything. If you shift it right you are matching the gear speed to the road speed and shouldn't really even need the synchros. But I could be wrong.
You are actually both correct. The silly synchronizers will often foil even a professional drivers attempts at clutchless float-shifting.
Just when you have everything set up right for the gears to mesh right in there, the stupid synchros touch the gear and spin it out of synch, thus the grind.
However, if you can manage to shift clutchless, and do so without any grinding of gears, then no harm is done.
I have driven countless big trucks with just about every transmission available and have often went coast-to-coast without touching the clutch-pedal except for initial take-off.
However, try as I might, whenever I attempt clutchless shifting in my Getrag, all I get is grinding gears.
I will try to explain how I do shift my Getrag, and any other synchronized transmission.
When shifting up, once took off and rolling, for each progressive gear, I let off the throttle and immediately as soon as gear slack allows, I move the shifter to NEUTRAL WITHOUT touching the clutch.
Then, in one smooth fluid motion, as I move the shifter into the next gear, I quickly push the clutch pedal and release the instant the gears mesh.
For down-shifting, I always just standard double-clutch with a throttle blip in between to get the gears to spinning.
If I ever had a synchronized transmission apart, I would be tempted to remove the synchronizers.
