i was changing my fuel filter yesterday and for fun while it was off i gave the lift pump lever a few pumps thinking i would see fuel pump out of the filter mount. but nothing... i also would have expected more resistance in the lever but it was very easy to move. do you think my pump is dead?

Sometimes depending where the motor stops the lift pump could act like that. Try turning the motor a little then try the lift pump again. IIRC

Same exact thing with me !

Operation of lever produces no fuel whatsoever at bleed valve above filter, the one that opens with a 10mm nut, and the lever is really easy to move. Previous owner said he recently replaced the lift pump, too.

I just filled the new filter all the way up to the top with fuel, screwed it on, and it fired right up from dead cold, instantly. Runs like, well, a Cummins. Strong and sure.

You have to turn the engine over a little to put the crank in the right postion to pump. it's quite normal and common . once yo do that you will see what i meen. The lever will feel like it's pumping, and if it's good, it will pump.

The lever will also move almost completely straight down, so be sure you are moving it all the way. I thought mine was dead and I just wasn't pushing it far enough down.
