Discussion of the week, Transfer Case Oil

I have searched here and Google. According to some Chevy forums, they say to run the same oil as what's in the trans in the event of a seal leak(Motor, gear, ATF). The Chub.... I mean Chevy guys say the NP205 can run any oil as long as it's oil.

With my trip coming up this weekend, I want to top off the oils.

Been debating either doing 10w30 Synthetic that's in the trans or 85w140 synthetic...

So have at it!

I would stick with the gear oils. 85w-140 might be a little over kill, but would be OK, IMO. Especially since it's synthetic.

I have heard the leaking seal theory. I would just put a good seal in and run the correct oil. Why don't you run oil in the radiator incase the HG or oil cooler lets go?

I vote for the cheapest Farm/Fleet store 80-90 weight gear oil you can find! It's what I run in everything, minus the getrags.

There is an 85/140 at the Zone for $12...

Capn, no disrespect here, but that is a dumb statement. Mixing 2 oils is 1 thing (look at diesel and the additives, WMO, WVO) but coolant and oil is way different.

Or maybe my sarcasm meter isn't calibrated...

All I was saying was, I would not fret about using a certain oil incase of seal leakage.

The oil for coolant was pure sarcasm.

A wise man once told me; any oil is better than no oil. It is so true.

I've been running dex III in all of my 205's since I've owned them. And I'm with the majority on not worrying about seals.

80w-90. gear oil clings to gears.

It says in the owners manual 80-90 gear oil, or in really cold temps below 0* they call for 50 weight motor oil
