Diesel Power Magazine 1st gen buildup

Hey guys, Diesel Power Magazine is building a 1st gen! Just lettin everyone know. 170rwhp stock, now up to 287rwhp/624rwtq with Dynomite diesel Stage 4 injectors, a cranked pump, rebuilt transmission by J&H Performance, and a sweet converter by Dave Goerend. Still stock turbo, intake, exhaust, fuel pin, etc. That stuff will be next. Then nitrous, turbo upgrade, 14mm pump head, head studs, etc. Shooting for low 12s, if not 11s....still through a non-lockup 727 trans. Still driven daily and gets 21mpg screaming at 2400rpm on the highway (no overdrive )

Did the new one come out? Cause I got the one where they put in 75HP injectors and the one when they play with the pump.

Diesel Power 1st gen update

Yep, picked up the new issue yesterday. This issue they install a pyro and boost gauge. They also install a nitrous kit and show project "Rust Bucket" doing a good burnout. Check it out..........

Nothing to write home about yet as far as times...ran 9.6@72mph in the 1/8th (which is like high 14s) but that was with a 2.3 60 ft (no posi) a misadjusted TV cable (shifted late) and the tires I had were 28 in tall, so I was defueling even before the end of the 1/8th. Going back soon with a set of 33 inch tall slicks and nitrous pretty soon to see if I can improve upon that time.

That is some magic mpg. Are you sure? And without overdrive at 2400? Mine has a tuff time gettin 17 with my mods and I have overdrive.

I was looking forward to getting these current issues of Dieselpower but I am kinda upset with them. I paid for a 1 year subscription and after 8 issues I got a letter saying my subscription is over, that I need to renew it. Why would I renew if I didnt get what I paid for the first time.

Anyway, enough rant. lol In order to run even a 12.8 you will need to trap at least 102mph, what gears do you plan on running to get the speed that high?

Closest 1/8th mile track is 30 miles, closest 1/4 mile is 130, so for now I'm going to be runnin the 1/8th. Eventually I want to switch to a 47RH. Not sure why the mileage is so good, but I think the light weight of the truck (4850 lb) and DDP4s have something to do with it.

That is a pretty light weight for your truck. My rclb W350 plow truck weighed 6840# without the plow attached. With some slicks and an OD tranny you should be running decient times now.

I Have a subscription to diesel power and have looked over all the rust bucket articles. All I can say is, can they overlook any more big power mods? Seriously, I thought about sending an e-mail with instructions how to really mod a first gen, they missed so much power in the pump alone its not even funny. Wait...

On the other hand, it's nice to see a first gen rotary getting some press as unflattering as it may be.

I haven't messed with the pump timing yet cause I'm going to put a lot of nitrous through it. Down here in LA you can't even drive fast on the streets stoplight to stoplight, much less race people, so the truck will be built to be nice on the street, then make big power at the track. Still doing a fuel pin, new lift pump, etc.

Advanced pump timing doesnt affect N2O, it makes for much more crisp throttle responce, increased mpg, and more HP. You only wouldnt want tons of timing if you were going to run LPG.
