Angry Did Not Pass

Ok so I got my pump reworked about a 1100 miles ago and I go to do emissions and I Failed. I ran a 45 opacity reading, and I am stumped as to why that would happen. I did however put the pedal down but not supper fast, and I did not go until the tach started bouncing. I just do not know why this would happen. The funny part the guys at the emission place told me to clean my air filter, that's what caused it. I told them that it has always been clean. I just was wondering if there are any suggestions of what I should do at this point.

Thanks

A dirty air filter or dirty turbo can result in a rich burn and higher opacity.

What do you do to it? And how did you get a 0% opacity reading? What do you guys mean by a dirty turbo? Mine does not look dirty

Dirty turbo is just what it sounds like. A fouled or dirty turbo (compressor) is not an efficient air mover an will contribute to a rich burn. This is more of a problem with oil soaked (sprayed) air filters as the oil that passes into the air stream can stick to the compressor blades and that attaches dirt that causes the problem.

I`m going to assume that it was a snap test. That said, operator input plays a VERY large role int the outcome of the test. My 1st emissions test I had done was with the following setup, POD`s,BHAF, fuel load screw +1 turn, slightly ground pin, the result was 13% IIRC (limit is 30 or 35% here). I just had the truck smogged right after the new year, everything the same setup wise on the engine EXCEPT now the fuel screw is bottomed and the pin has a MUCH more aggressive grind , test result ????(insert drumroll)...0%!! Needless to say I was very happy and surprised. I did notice that the operator rolled into the skinny very easily. So IMO short of being able to control the rate of throttle input your best bet would be to back off all the tweaks (fuel+smoke screws) and put a TON of slack in the throttle linkage adjustment, should do ya good.

Yup, just de-tune it once a year for the test. When you go back and pass the test, tell 'em all you did was put in a new filter---they'll pat themselves on the back for helping a brother out

X2 on the dirty turbo. Mine had a thick coating of K&N oil in it when I got it. The vanes just about touched the coating. PITA to get off too.

I thought to get a zero, you'd have to turn the key off! Good info, no test here in Jersey for trucks between 10,001 registered gvw and I think 19,000 IIRC. This state is full of red tape , but that is one advantage here. Then again most towns consider 10,001 lbs and above commercial and give you a hard time about storing the truck residentially. And if it's 10k or higher the plates get more expensive. They get ya one way or another. We do a self inspection, no need for any interference by the 'Man'.

I got a 10 with the star all the way up but the pin all the way in. I also made the mistake of going in the morning with the sun behind the truck! Makes it look worse that way. Also, if you are really having trouble, drive 30 miles out and back on the freeway and then drive it straight in. Makes a huge difference!
