Question Define o-rings in a head ???

I have heard a lot about O-rings. I get that you have to have the head machined for circular grooves, but what for?

When do you need them?

Change in gaskets?

Could I get some definition?

Thanks guys!

D-C out!

The O-ring groove is cut into the head, centered on the cylinder ring such that when a stainless wire is pressed into the groove, you've got about a .010" ring protrusion.
This pinches the standard head gasket's ring providing a tighter, stronger seal so as to better accommodate higher combustion pressures.

a groove is milled in the cylinder head for the oring to sit in, while still inside the cylinder head gasket. orings are just more support for the cylinder head gasket. alot of different opinions on when you need them. i think any advanced timing coupled with more then factory boost results in premature head gasket wear. after two head gaskets and a bunch of fluids i bought 14 mm head studs for my engine and a marine head gasket.

Talking Thanks!!

Thanks guys, That cleared her right up!

I know this has been asked here already and I will search but I figure Ill ask any way.

Are there any places I can find who can mill the o-rings (on-line or can a local machine shop figure it out?)?, and are there any sources for re-man,new or "built heads" for my truck?

Yup, PDR worked it over such that it now presents with 195cfm intake, and 220cfm exhaust. That amounts to roughly a 34% increase on the intake and 44% on the exhaust over a stock 2nd gen head.

Still gotta get a 0.010" over stock head gasket and studs.

That should really wake 'er up. Almost no matter what engine you are building, the power is in the cyl. head(s)
