No, I am basically talking about methanol, the main ingredient in the windshield washer fluid. If you ckeck around the lubricant shops, you should be able to find it sold by the gallon. Works wonders.

I just put a big piece of cardboard on today in the parking lot.... not the only one. Possibility of an inch or so of ice then 6-8 inches of snow on top of that over the next 48hrs.
I am going to try tosssing a tarp over the whole cab. See if it will keep the windows clear, and trap the heat from the block heater a bit, so it'll be kinda warm when I get in.
Like Andy said, we're suppossed to be getting our first real taste of winter today( yeeech) so I 'll find out how well it works.
Andy, how bads the ice up there? Got about a half inch so far here south of Topeka......

Tomorrow mornings low of -5 will test the additive I am using I guess, no problems at all today, fired right up.
methyl hydrate can be found in the paint section of any local hardware store, for cheaper than paying for prestone or other de-icers. It's used as a paint thinner. Also as recommended by someone earlier, you can use it full strength to de ice with.
You can also use it in your diesel if you have water in the tank. Methyl HYDRATE enables water to be combusted, just don't use too much with a diesel.
It also burns cleaner than gas, so if you have a gasser and you need to pass an emissions test, dump in a gallon on 1/4 tank. It runs funny, and may die at idle, but it passes the test
Really good stuff.

I just take my CD case and jam it down on the accelerator, wedged behind the brake pedal, and run the RPMs up to about 2100. Turn defroster on high, go inside and wait 5 minutes. We're getting the same stuff here that you have, did this yesterday to get all the accumulation off from the day, works everytime.

Use to see guys use the yellow stuff in Germany. Walking back to the post after the bars close, guys would whiz on windshields of parked cars. They didn't have the same safety glass and it would spiderweb the windshield.
I used to travel to Dresden alot on business. Boston to Frankfurt to Dresden.
Never stationed over there, never was in the service for that matter.
Dresden is in the former East Germany, about 90 miles south of Berlin and 2 hours ~west of Prague in the Chech Republic.
This was from 1998-2000 so it was after the wall fell. We always stayed right down the street from some old Soviet barracks and Soviet tank depot. Huge old rundown ugly buildings.
The Germans sure know how to party. We always had a great time at night in the city eating and drinking those great German micro-brews, and also in the afternoon's in the beer gardens along the Elb.
They even had block parties. Huge numbers of people partying in closeby neighborhoods.
It's a fun place to visit for sure.

Yeah miss the Volksfests. I was stationed on the outskirts of Nurnberg one year, then Wildflecken. From Wildflecken, we'd head up into Suhl, Meiningen and a couple other cities east of the border. The old sewer systems reaked and you can tell the buildings had looked good once, but they hadn't really gotten a chance to fix the stuff up in the early 90's. The women still looked good and the had some fun parties though.
