D70 Spiders....

Hey, i'm thinking about getting an extra set of spider gears and welding mine together, my question is, can i remove the welded spider assy out of the carrier or would it need to be cut apart, I'm thinking if i can remove them i'll weld them and then when i want an open (which i'm not sure when i would) I would pull them out and throw the extra spiders and pin back in. But if i can't fit them through the hole i'll leave them be and buy a locker some year down the long long road....

This is for my 92 w250.

I am pretty sure they need to turn to be removed.

Darn, so i guess i'm going to try and slap the lsd i forgot i had in mine lol.....

how lucky do you think a guy can get if I pull the lsd carrier out of a rearend i have that the ring gear got chewed up, put my ring gear on the lsd carrier and the stuck it back in my orginal case, do you think the backlash and tooth pattern would be good??? wouldn't hurt to try i guess...other than 3 quarts of gear lube...

Due to curved surfaces on the back of the spiders, removal is impossible if they are welded. I did see a rear with a PowerLok that the guts were removed and welded to create a spool, though... I have swapped carriers and using the shims from the matching housing and checking backlash, have been both successful and utterly failed at setup. But backlash is simple to reset, so DIY isn't out of the question, if you are familiar w/setup procedures.

So, if i was to press the bearings off both carriers then swap the shims from the old (open) to the new (lsd) carrier i "Might" be okay?? Have you ever just threw the carrier in and checked backlash and if its not close try the shims??? also isn't there a back lash tolerence?? say .005-.015 (just throwing these numbers out there) if i was with in those tolerences but not what the old one was will i run into problems with the gears wearing wrong???

I always check the backlash before removal and match it as closely (within .001 or so) as possible. I guess you can get extremely lucky and just slap a carrier in and get the backlash right.

Hamilton is about 45 miles east of St. Joseph on HWY 36.
