D Series 2WD Front 5 Lug to 8 Lug and Suspension Conversion
I have a question on what it would take to convert a 1986 D series front end from the 5 lug front to 8 lug and the suspension. I bought the truck with the intention to convert it to a 4BT Cummins diesel which may force me to change out the rear axle assembly to an 8 lug version. I also have on hand a 1976 D-200 2WD. Would the 1976 parts - springs, a-frames, etc be a direct bolt on to the 1/2 ton frame? Would I be farther ahead if I cut the rivets and removed the entire 3/4 ton cross member assembly and bolted it onto the 1/2 ton frame? If so, which steering box would work? This is still in the planning stage. Has anyone upgraded their brakes and suspension from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 using factory parts?
You might check to see if the D200 had larger diameter ball joints (at the taper) than the D100. If so, you may need to swap control arms or at least ball joints. Don't know about Dodge but I'm pretty sure Chevy used to do that.
All Dodge Trucks under 8750 GVW( 3300 gvwf) should have the light front ends in them. to convert your "light" front end into a 8 bolt all you need to do is buy the proper rotors. ie...D250 w/3300lbs front suspension
