Crew Cab Conversion Question
Crew Cab Conversion Question
I am wondering how other Crew Cab convertion fellow enthusiests are going to title their conversions. Given the CTD vin plate is riveted to the dash instead of the body. Is everyone pretty much registering their conversion as the CTD that the dash and vin and title came from OR are they registering and titling tem as the original crew and original vin from the old dash? Just curious what others have and are doing? Thanks, Ron
I know here is WV the smart thing to do is register it as the older dash tag reads as it will be cheaper in paying our yearly vehicle tax
. Plus why would you want to register it as a 92-93 when everyone knows they stopped making crews in 84? When you only swap in a different drive train thats not illegal but swapping vin tags is very illegal.

I dont understand your dilema. The engine, trans, drivetrain are all going in the crew. its just an engine swap, hence the crew vehicle itself is still the same also the vin,the engine doesnt come in to play. So if its a 85 crew its still an 85 crew. Just with a diesel engine. Or are you planning on putting the dash of the donor veh. in it? If so I dont know, contact the local dmv about it then they wont be surprised when you show up to tag it.
Gonna have to try and register mine as a 92. All I have is a stripped 74 donor cab that im putting my 92call dash in. Prob need to check in to that never looked at it as the 2 door 4 door with a non matching vin. I don't have a choice though have to work something out.

Hi All, I was just curious as to what most others have done is all. My point was is that technically Mopar made a big federal error when these trucks where made. In that the dash vin plate was riveted to the dash itself versus the steel body of the truck. This is the only vehicle i've ever run across that this was done this way. I planned on registering at as the 84 1 ton crew cab longbed the title says she is. It should save on insurance as mentioned. Yes the interior from the 92 is going in the 84 so the id plates have to be switched from one dash to the other.
Thanks for all the input. Ron

I titled it with the original crew vin. I told DMV that it was re-powered with a diesel. I changed vin tags on the dash, because I used the donor's dash. We got a new title showing the sale of the truck and new plates because the old one had not been registered since 1996. My mother-in-law who works for the Oregon State Police says we are legit and no need for a vin inspection. Look under your state's laws, and note this is a re-power, not a reconstruction or custom
I encourage those who are register the vehicle as if it were the donor to do a little more checking with your state's laws. The title of the vehicle goes with the cab and chases. The only way the conversion would be a legitimate 1989-1993 would be if the cab were stretched and then it may even be considered "custom." Bottom line, when your vin is run by law enforcement or insurance, it needs to come back as a four door Dodge pick-up, they don't care if it burns diesel, alcohol, or gas.
I should have put my post together before posting, here is my third cent to offer. The vin tag in the dash is merely an easy place to find it for an officer on patrol. It is the one that will be "inspected" most times. However, it is the tag on the firewall (under the vented cowl cover) and the stamping on the frame that are the final word should your vehicle be stolen or wrecked. Also when talking with insurance tell them straight up that you have done a re-power and resto, don't claim it to be "custom" or they will charge you a higher premium; on the other hand, tell them the expected worth of the vehicle should it need replaced. My truck is fully covered with collision, comp, and theft, and they know it is a 1985 Crew with a re-power and new paint.
On my trucks the vin is stamped under the hood on the cowl and on the frame behind the passenger front tire. If I changed the cab, I'd put the original vin plate from the original truck on the new cab, and say that the frame was rebodied. Frame VIN is what counts, here in nj and if I was to be pulled over and inspected, they're going to read the numbers on the frame vs the reg, vs the cab... and they all better be the same, otherwise I'm getting impounded.
I don't have aclue of the laws here in Michigan and mine is not a crew cab, but I replaced the cab on my 93 with a 93 cab. It was even the same color, but I repainted it a different colr and used the original dash and even put the original tag on the door jamb but the tag on the cowl doesn't match. So I guess I could get jambed if they really looked it over but, I think the chances of that are pretty slim
