Crazy day... My wheel came off

Yesterday I was head to the beach a good 70 miles from home to stay at a buddies house. I was about 5 miles from my destination and heard a soft crack and felt a wobble. 5 seconds later my wheel was flying by me into oncoming traffic. The front end dropped and I dragged the rotor into the grass median to a stop. Thankfully my wheel didn't hit any cars, but it left me wondering what the heck happened? Their steel wheels and I haven't had the wheels off since I bought it. I know for a fact the PO had em torqued because I drove the girl from MI to TX right after buying. All the studs were stripped and two were sheared off. Maybe some one thought about stealing them and saw the locknut on it and left a few loose?

Had it towed back to the house free of charge via AAA and replacing rotor and all the studs and lugnuts since they were history. Also left a little dent and rubber on the fender.

Never had it happen to me before, just wondering is this really just a freak accident or was someone messing with me?

It happens. I have lost 2 rears over the years. To bad on the paint. OUCH. It could have worked loose or been helped.

The one that sheared were the only ones holding the tire on, the others probably had no lug nuts on them, someone was going to steal your wheels but didn't quite get them.

Ha I was thinking the thing same. The dent looks like it should pop out pretty easily and the rubber I hope will buff out.

I'm thinking someone jacked with the lugs too. I had to work Saturday morning due to an old CAT engine down and I parked in a place visible from the road. We were away for 4 hours at the well and drove home. Then drove to Galveston. I can't believe I made it that far and didn't lose it on the interstate. I'll be sure to check my lugs more often and especially before a ling trip.

Maybe I'll put a lock nut for every lug

Been there... it sucks but once its back together youll be fine, just a little more willing to check your lug nut torque regularly.

That sucks.
But if you think that's bad. My dad has had the wheels come loose and almost fall off his ford 5 times.
It's a dually with aluminum wheels and a bad lug nut desinge. We started putting them on with blue locktight. It's working good so far.

Ha! I've talked to Derek about it and he has seen all the pics. He couldn't believe it either. She should be good as new shortly.

If it was someone trying to steal my wheels then they must not have read my license plate

I'd hate to be the guy I caught messing with it.
