Valves are easy.

Pull valve covers. Turn motor by alternator nut counter clockwise until the exhaust rocker on #1 comes up and the intake JUST starts coming down.

2. Exhaust
3. Intake
4. Exhaust
5. Intake
6. Intake + Exhaust

Mark harmonic balancer and rotate 360* OR look for exhaust on #6 to come up and the intake JUST start to go down (when turning counter clockwise on alternator nut)

1. Intake + Exhaust
2. Intake
3. Exhaust
4. Intake
5. Exhaust

Factory specs are .010 intake and .020 Exhaust. Most guys here run a little tighter (.008 and .018) I run a LOT tighter than that. You will need a 14mm wrench and a flat screw driver.

Now. Bumping timing is a BEAR without an s-wrench. There are three bolts (13mm) on the front of the pump that attach it to the timing cover. This is the difficult ones without the special wrench. You can look in the sticky above for complete directions.

The 366 spring? Cons are they dont come factory with them. THEY SHOULD!!!

Honestly I cannot see ANY cons to the 3200 spring. Wakes the truck up considerably. Install LOOKS intimidating. After you put one in... you look back and say 'why was I scared so much?' Again... there is a good set of instructions in the sticky that will give LOTS more info than I can in one post.

Take Care

And there is a 10mm on the pump down low closer to the cab attached to a bracket

Yeah what he said

What I did was I printed out the directions from the sticky then I studied them and when I was done studying them I studied some more. Just don't get intimidated it really sounds harder than it is. If you don't think you want to tackle them by yourself just ask for help there is most likely a member on the forum that lives close enough to give you a hand.

I wouldn't say a "breeze," but certainly doable for the moderately competent shadetree mechanic.

No cons whatsoever - as long as you don't figue out some way to botch the install.

Only problem I had was getting the throttle shaft indexed, and that was a pretty quick easy fix once I discovered what happened.

I have done two and had that problem on both of them. You would think that I would have learned the first time

Y'all almost had me talked into trying it by myself.

Now, I am scared off again.

Adjustin valves difficulty???

You have your pro's and con's

My suggestion would be to install a pyro first, then do the rest.

Remember, when you bump your timing, your pyro will show less heat, but the piston will "see" more.............................................

Don't be scared. When I did the first one I realized what I did wrong I was just to stupid to remember about it the second time. Although I did remember when I started puting it all back together

No worries. I did mine not long after I got the truck. Lucky if I could spell diesel by then. Hooked up a FP gauge to one of the VE in/outlets, I forget which) just a couple weeks later. How much could I have possibly known??

Reason I did it was because it is by FAR the biggest bang for the buck. $20 and a couple hours work and it seems like a different truck. Especially a stick truck, I'd imagine.

How much less and how much more ??

What is the advantage of bumping the timing ?? (bumping = advancing the timing, I would assume)

What does it do for mileage ??

Power ??

Starting ??

Thanks

while you have the top of the pump off you should do the throttle shaft and bushing if your doing all the rest i would shot for doing that to its not hard at all. just add a lil heat to the bushing and use a socket or a punch and it will come right out same with going back in. you will thank yourself later..
and for doing the spring, once you do it you will laugh at how easy it is...

replace it.. were you got your 366 spring from they shoud have the shaft and bushing. and its cheap. after i did my spring the throttle shaft started to leak so i had to replace it. so agian i had to take the top of the pump off so if it were me i would do it when you to the spring..

One thing I thought of and should be in the sticky instructions for installing the spring was when you replaced the throttle shaft o-ring don't install it back into the top of the pump. Install the spring onto the top hat duhicky and onto the throttle shaft. Them slide the throttle shaft back into the housing. Im going to try this on my buddys truck. I had some trouble doing it the way it said in the sticky. You could really use a 3rd hand. But doing it the way i suggested I think would be a breeze. Good luck
