Cool down before shutoff
Cool down before shutoff
Hello,
Just wondering. Do you allow your truck to cool down before you turn it off? Being new to diesels a buddy told me to wait and let the engine cool down before shut off. What temp to shut down at?

Most of the time just gearing down to stop mine is cool enough to shut down but when pulling the trailer on the interstate I have to let it idle for a few minutes before shutting down. I usually let mine get down to about 250 degrees or less before I shut it down. A hot turbo at shutdown will cook the oil in it and ruin a turbo quickly.
Mine usually takes about a minute to 2 minutes in just regular driving, but I've still got the 3" exhaust. If you've got a pyrometer, let it get under 300* (pre-turbo). If you don't, a pyrometer is a good idea. Otherwise you can just let it idle for a little before shutting it down. My truck ran for 13 years before getting a pyrometer, and it was shut down without cooling (except when we pulled stuff with it, then we let it cool for a little bit) with no problems, however, it's definitely recommended to let it idle.
There should be a chart in your owners manual to give you a basic idea of how long to let it idle for different loads and speeds.
