cold weather fuel starvation
cold weather fuel starvation
I've been using Power Service anti gell, and I've just changed the fuel filter and bled all the injector lines, truck runs perfect at 15F +. On mornings that are below zero (and that's every morning here lately) it starts right up and idles smoothly. Try to drive it though and it will not go more than 35 mph, acting like it's fuel starved. I have another diesel truck (Toyota LandCruiser) that I fuel from the same station. It will start right up even at -20 (if it's been plugged in) and run perfect.
What's up? Vacuum leak in line from tank? Maybe lift pump begining to fail?
The Toyo has a big Racor filter and an electric lift pump, could that be the difference?
Waiting for spring in NNY,
groundhog killed by hypothermia,

Ya, the Dodge is plugged in as well.
Starts instantly, idles smooth, but can't get out of it's own way on the road.
Wait till mid-morning when it's warmed up and it runs great.
Maybe time to move from the Canadian border to the Mexican?

That is really odd -- every diesel I have ever had, if you could get it running, it would go, no matter how cold it was. I have been running my truck up here at below zero F temps with no trouble.
However, I just ran into a guy a little bit ago who was saying how diesels "didn't make power when they were cold" "wouldn't go over 30 mph till they were warmed up"
That fella must have owned your truck before . . .
I'll have to think about this . . . Let us know if you figure anything out.

Is the fuel heater working? The fuel heater is part of the filter mount, there is a wiring harness sticking out. Make sure you've got power and ground there with the key on. After the engine is up to temp the filter ought to be warm to the touch - the thermostat is set for ~60 degrees so it won't be hot, but it should get warm.
