cleaning the I.C.

cleaning the I.C.

Hey guys I recently bought a 93 2wd dually d350 cummins.This is my first diesel truck,so I dont know much about them.It rock stock,first thing I did was hacked the back half of the exhaust off(there was this huge dent in the pipe by the diff) I just turned the pipe out in front of the rear tire.

Im going to turn up the pump and stuff when I get my pyrometer and boost gauge later down the road.

My question is based off an experiance with my Grand national (the only turbo rig Ive owned)
When I got it (G.N.) I removed the i.c. and cleaned it (wow there was abunch of oil and crud in there) then I belled out all the inlets and outlets on the i.c. and turbo and It really helped the car out.Is this somthing that should be done on these cummins rigs? How difficult of a task is it to remove all that stuff (has a/c) looks like theres some other kinda cooler in there? besides the turbos I.c. what the heck is that? like some kinda dual i.c.?

Do you think doing this would be worth the effort?

Welcome to the forum. First of all, nice sounding truck, Fill out your signature with info on the truck, Trans, Gears, Cab type etc.....

The intercooler could use a good cleaning by now i'm sure, like any "radiator" type thing up front. It gets dirty..... the intercooler is IN FRONT of the a/c condenser so removing it takes 3 minutes and cleaning it is easy.

If your truck is an an auto you should see the trans cooler too, may have to move that out of the way too, I'm not sure though, not an auto guy

I tried to do the sig. with all the trucks specs but for whatever reason it wont show up ? mods have to clear it?

Rockmike, clean the fins with a garden hose, DO NOT USE AN AIR GUN!!!! This will damage the fins and make it not be as efficient at cooling. And make sure that whatever went in to the fins comes out the same way it got there. Don't try and push it through to the other side, it'll only get jammed and again cause it to not be as efficient.
Also, if I had oil in my I/C, I'd be worried . That oil probably came from your turbo, which means that it's leaking. It also means your engine will, at some point in time, run away on you. I don't mean to be alarmist, but better safe than sorry, esp. as a rebuild kit costs $50. To be sure it's coming from the turbo, check the outlet tube from the turbo to the I/C. If you have oil in it you have a problem.
Brandon already mentioned the other stuff up front there, so you should be good to go. Oh, to get the oil out of your I/C, pour some Dawn liquid soap, (dishwashing liquid) in it and shake it all around. Then rinse it 3 or 4 times and make sure ALL the soap is out. Dawn is an excellent degreaser, and biodegradable so is user friendly. Unlike the oil you just poured out with it...

A K&N filter can eventually coat the inside on the intercooler with oil. I swore off K&N's when I discovered this happening to my truck.

The AFE spray is nearly the same stuff as the K&N spray too.

Thanks man,I hope there isnt oil in there then.I havnt got in there yet but I think I want to take a look.

I put the hastings af 2329 air filter on it,shes a biggin...I dont believe in k&n's I live in the desert and dont feel they filter the fine dust very well.

Nope,its just painted white in the bed,with alluminum bed rail covers.

Ive benn looking for a while.Its hard to find these 1st gens nice like this that arnt an arm and a leg to buy...I gave the guy $4,000 for it.The alt didnt work.Last night I swapped the crank sensor...still didnt charge,then I swapped the relay...still no worky,swapped the alt...now its charging but its not bringing the batt. voltage up past 12.4 idunno maybe a issue with the pcm? where is the pcm located?c an I run some test on it?

I'm dealing with a similar issue. Alt, A/C, and cruise go out on me intermittently. I went through checking the crank sensor and harness, relay, etc. I'm thinking now it may be some faulty wiring behind the dash. Good luck.
