I am looking at a nv4500 out of a 1997 chevy I am wondering if I can get this transmission to work on my truck. It needs to be rebuilt. I am not sure of the miles. Is there anything I can look for to see if it is worth saving? How hard is the rebuild. I am in no hurry to get this into my truck but I have been looking for a while for something like this. It is listed in an add and all the information that I know so far is below:
nv4500 needs rebuilt......97 2500 4x4...... it looks like it might work behind the diesel motor? Asking $300 as is

Was it behind a diesel? If not then for sure walk away. I have no idea if the input shafts are the same, the diameter and lengths, as well as spline might be different.
I'd call these guys and talk to there tech line for more definitive answers.

If it is a '96 or newer GM it could be made to work. To make it a drop in replacement for a Dodge you will need the input shaft w/bearing retainer, dodge HD mainshaft w/5th gear and a dodge rear extension housing. Reverse is probably not syncronized, they started that around '98 IIRC.
