True True,
I'd hot wire the O/d to a switch so you can lock it in and listen for noises.
For under $1200 i can't see not buying a good bodied 1st gen even if it needs trans work... but thats me.

hi crossy's son, thank you for your thoughts. the truck had a lot of dents & body damage visible when i walked around it. i didn't get real up/down in there to look for rust after the transmission diagnosis came in, and after seeing all the other troubles with the rig (broken e-brake, cracked windshield, power window not staying in track, broken door handle, something wrong with front end steering/rod, bad front brakes, no rearview, no stereo, no AC, ripped seat, trashed/missing interior trim & other parts, abs/brake lights on, & other things i'm forgetting right now). i'm still keeping the truck in mind if the guy would go more towards $500 & i don't find anything else, but all of the above added to the initial compromise of no 4 wheel drive really makes this one a low priority vehicle with which to get involved, for me.
i'll keep y'all updated as my search continues, if you folks don't mind lending a hand in my cummins hunt. thanks
