Charging problem

So recently the fuseable link went out on my 91.5. So I replaced each wire with a circuit breaker which fixed the problem. But now the system won’t charge past 10 volts. If I take the negative cable off the truck shuts off. Alternator checks out as good though. Any ideas of if it could be my fuseable link fix

Wiring is not my best subject I has a 91.5 The alternator would fluctuate to under charge to over charge it was the voltage regulator on the firewall

Problem with circuit breakers, vs fuses, you have a more difficult time figuring out issues because the short keeps the circuit breaker off when it's in effect, vs fuses burning out. The voltage regulator isn't receiving its intended power because your circuit breaker is held in the disconnected state because of whatever short is occuring in that circuit.

Disconnecting the negative cable breaks the circuit for the battery which is powering the shutdown solenoid.

I would bet you have a direct short that's being masked by the circuit breaker

Buy or find or borrow a wiring diagram for your ride....better yet, a FSM.

Kyle:

Check your personal messages for a link to the 92 Service Manual.

I don't know. But I don't have a 92 FSM. If somebody sent me one I'd put it up on my server.

I'm confused. I DO have the FSM for the 92 RamCharger. Somebody told me he had the 91/91.5 FSM if we can figure out how to get it to me I'll put it up on my server.

So I pulled the wires off the circuit breakers on the side of the cab where it runs to the windows and what not. Still the batter will not charge at all. Going to have the battery tested tomorrow.

What is the alternator puting out at the battery cable ends? 12V? 13.7? 15V?

Ideally it should be around 13.8 truck running.

Do you own a multimeter?
Even a cheapo harbor freight will work for ya.

Now I can’t even get it to turn over. Whenever I put the battery charger on and it will charge up to 13.8. But now when I turn the key over it won’t make a sound like it has no connection at all

I'm wondering if you have a bad ignition switch. If the switch goes bad the alternator won't get a signal to charge. Also your bulkhead connector can cause problems. It's kind of like Atlanta airport. Everything goes through there.

So..

Truck ran fine until you messed with the fusable links after one failed.

Now you're not getting anything when you try to start it.

The battery (fully charged) should read 12.0 to 12.7 give or take, and you say its at 13.8 at the battery??? Well, that not good. 13.8 v should be with the truck running, multimeter at the battery terminals, with the battery slightly low in charge. If the battery is 13.8 disconnected from the truck, its been overcharged.

Sounds like you either need to find local help, or put it up for sale
