According to the theory in the FSM, the PCM needs to see the CPS signal before it will close the ASD relay, sending field power to the alternator.

CPS also affects tachometer.

Have you done any diagnostics on the CPS?
Have you at least reseated the connector and checked the gap?

I have checked the plug before hard to get my fat hand to to gap it but is there any true way to test it, and will oil affect its performance?

Probe the plug at the front of the engine.

Black wire should be ground
Tan wire should be 8V from the PCM
Grey wire should toggle up and down from near 0 to near 5v as the slot moves past the sensor. I believe it's a hall effect sensor so it should work as if it was a feeler switch.

Fix what's missing.

Before you go too far, check the wire that runs from the alternator to the PCM. Mine went behind the windshield washer tank, and AFTER I bought a new PCM because the mechanic told me that was what was wrong, he found that the wire I referred to was broken behind the tank.

I was hoping the OP had the moxy to find out why a voltage was missing before throwing money at it.

Symptoms, however, seem to indicate loss of CPS to PCM.

Tan should be 8V from the PCM. Without that the grey wire would also be dead.

Find the tan wire near the PCM, or if you can probe pin 7 on the pcm connector (tan wire). It should have 8 volts on it.

Even before that, is there power (12V) on the red wire at the ASD relay? PCM pin 3 (red) and the ASD relay (red) get power from the same fusible link. Of course, without that battery voltage you won't get 8V out of the PCM.
