braking on down shift auto???
I have had this truck for 8 months now and have noticed that the auto tranny provides braking in 2nd gear. If I let off the throttle in (D) the engine drops to idle speed and the truck freewheels, however if I shift it into second (still coasting) the tranny hooks back up and the engine speed picks up with the rolling speed. The truck then immediately slows (as per an exhaust brake).
This is at any speed.
Is this normal or has the tranny been modified?
Thanks,
Dan

its normal, same thing as shifting down in a manual. instead of the engine working to turn the wheels, the wheels must work to turn the engine, hence the slowing down.

It locks up on compression only in (2&1) but not in (D) and it is a non locking tc. It freewheels in(D) at all speeds.
It was my understanding that a non locking tc freewheeled in all geers on compression?
Thanks for responding,
Dan
