Borgeson install, Is large Spring needed ??

I installed a borgeson steering shaft. I used the one with u-joints on both ends. I did not use the large spring that when over the shaft behind where the rag joint used to be.

What is the spring for ? Do I need it ?

It places a small amount of preload on the overlapping slip shafts and plastic shear pin inside the column and also acts as a vibration dampener. If cheap Chrysler engineering could have eliminated it to save a dollar per truck they certainly would have. I have seen a few earlier trucks without the spring. My 91 & 92 4WD both have it but an 89 2WD here doesn't IIRC.
