So I realize this has nothing to do with our trucks but thought there would be a bit of interest here... We're doing head gaskets on one of our mains.

It's a v16 paxman that has a continuous hp rating of 3000hp

Each of the fuel pumps( there's one for each cylinder) can deliver 500cc of fuel

Idle is 640 rpm and max rpm is 1500

The exhaust is 18"

And the turbo cost 250k and its max shaft rpm is 25k; the inducer compressor side is roughly 10"

 

Looks similar to the old two stroke Detroit diesel locomotive engines.

 

These were used for locomotives from what I understand... Seems like an offal big train engine if you ask me

 

Yeah they barely fit. The generator they ran was **** near as big as the engine.

 

The biggest engines I saw were big Alcos that were used to power lights and conveyors on a dam project. they would use the engines to get the conveyors( all running down hill) running then switch the motors over to generators . As long as they kept enough dirt on the belts they had (free power)

I was searching for a picture but can't find one.

 

Biggest ive interacted with were tractor trailer size (the actual trailer) cat powered portable compressors used to air a ski area snowmaking operation. They would bring in 12 of them and the night crew had to keep them fueled-something like 300 gals every three hours?- even in -20 the turbos would be glowing molten red hot. I couldnt believe the $$to keep a little bit of snow on this mnt. We had to wait till after prime elec. Usage because of the tax on the grid. Supposedly $14000 a night elec. Along with fuel bill.

 

They do the same thing up on the resorts here. You would think that would cost more than they make. A lot of people flock up there every chance they get. It doesn't look like fun to me though, too many people trying to do the same thing in the same place at the same time.

 

What are these engines used to power?

I've never played with the alcoas although we have them and I've been next to them; pretty comparable size to the paxmans

That's right alcoa was a locomotive company. Maybe the engine and generator looked bigger mounted on a frame on skids. The Detroits I saw were mounted the same as the Paxmans you are working on. with the pan below the floor.
