best undercoating?
best undercoating?
Hi,
I have a 1998 dodge 2500, the underneath is VERY clean with no rust whatsoever... it is not undercoated and in VA they are getting very salt-happy and there is a LOT of chemicals on the roads... i want to undercoat my truck, my brother used 3M on his bronco but i'd like to use something different... any other ideas?
Thanks, Dana

Get some plastic say 10x20. Don't use a tarp because it is woven and not impermeable.
Stake it down and drive on it.
Mix 50% used engine oil 50% diesel or kero in a bug sprayer, shake it up and spray your undercarriage.
Leave your truck on plastic overnight to drip off. Roll the plastic up and dispose of properly.

Engine oils generally cause certain types of rubber to decompose through the swelling process. Oil based greases wash off and require replacement touch ups almost yearly. I switched over to the 3M paintable undercoating recently. The grease based ones work the best in body cavities that have bottom side drains built in. I think a silicone based grease thinned with kerosene would work good in those areas. Kerosene evaporates quickly whereas diesel does not. Using diesel would prolong the setting time causing the grease to sag and drip for a longer amount of time. I actually still have some of the old Mobile brand grease based undercoat that was commonly used back in the 1980's. The instructions said to use kerosene as the thinning agent for spraying. I had an old 5 gallon garden sprayer that had a hole drilled in the top end for a tubeless tire stem. You mixed up the grease and put an air line onto the valve stem. On the other end was a piece of 1/4" brake line about 2 foot long attached to the hose. The end of the line was cut and smashed which produced the spray pattern. It worked really good back then.
I made a pressure sprayer from a propane tank. I put in 100% used oil, warm it up ( if its really cold out ) put the regulator on 100 psi, turn the 1/4 turn valve and hang on. 5 gallons does a whole 1 ton truck including under bed.

Do NOT use rustbullet it did not work, dad and I restored an old landcruiser 2 years ago, maybe put 1,000 miles on since then and rust is coming back. It might be because I have horrible luck but we followed the instructions and the rust is back. If you are trying to have a rust prevention on anything that already has rust on it such as surface rust you should look into a brand called overrust dad uses it on his spreader truck and it works.

Thanks Montana,
