best transmission setup
ok so people have been telling me to get a torque converter in another thread. well ive done a few searches and im on the fence. would it be better to build up this transmission or swap in another transmission such as a 47rh? or going manual? i dont know what to do. a torque converter and a valve body for this tranny would be about a grand. suggestions from experience anybody?
what do you plan on using the truck for (pulling, daily driving, weekend toy)? how much power are you looking to make with it? How much money do you want to spend. give us some more info and it would make it easier to tell you what would be best.
Daily driver, pulliong and I wanna go fast basically prettymuch bulletproof I'm just wondering what would be the right way to go cuz I'd rather spend 1500 in the right direction. Than throw a grand at the wrong direction
I did the 47rh trans conversion and love it... I love my little lock up switch.... But I don't know how close it would be if you built the snot out of your currrent trans and had a real nice tight converter...
I usally will lock er up right when it shifts into od. Or if I'm cruising around town I'll lock it up in 3rd. My converter isn't that tight, so it makes a pretty big difference.. Simply the best mod by far, now I just need about 4k to throw at it and I could have lots of fun!!
I vote for the lockup. I put one in my 93 dually and it really is the best thing I've done to the truck. No slip and go fast. I had it done locally here in South Missouri by the best tranny guy in a long ways.

the 47rh is a CONVERSION i dont think alot of guys realize that. you need the adapter, starter and basicly everything from a 47rh equipped 2nd gen truck to do the conversion in a first gen.
i vote Put a tripple disk torque converter in your current tranny (518) from Dave Goerend.
and put a Valvebody in it. NOT A SHIFTKIT, an actual complete valve body upgrade and your truck will be a totally different beast.
the actualy tranny itself is a strong unit
the 47rh has lockup and is a strong unit but upgrade parts are much more expensive for that transmission.

I would have to disagree and say nearly everybody knows the 47rh is a swap. I think the vast majority knows what tranny they have in their truck. If you swap that out to a different tranny, that would be considered a conversion.
My vote would be for the 47rh, if you have the money. Like Brandon said, it is a whole lot cheaper to build one of our trannys than it is the 47rh.

I SPENT 3700 in the wrong direction via a 518 build Suncoast billet converter billet this and that and would kill to have that money back for a 47rh build (the one sitting in my shed) or nv4500!
Hey hardheaded, this one is up to you, everyone is gonna have different oppinions that they are 100% set on, but in reality you still might change your mind after doing a 47rh swap. Heres what i did, i built the 727 for my truck, and i did it right, billet goodies shift kit (valvebody upgrades are good for those that dont know how to setup the valvebody they have) performance clutches and bands.........ect. and then i blew the planetary gear(wasnt told to upgrade it by my tranny guy, he forgot
) so i rebuild agian with the planetary upgrade(which i found out later they sent the wrong one and i blew it up again
) so i put a stocker in to get me by for the time being. Notice, i had to rebuild the tranny everytime it broke, so i basically rebuilt it 3 times, i luckily got tranny parts at cost and do the rebuilding myself, but i still dumped tons of money into it
. I now have a built 47rh that i built and its great, but i honestly wish i had gone with a 5 or 6 speed from the beginning and done the conversion. It would have cost less in the long run. but to each his own, if you like manuals then you should save for one, but if you prefer the auto then build a 47rh and have fun

ok, so i am just saying hypothetically; if i were to go with the 47rh could somebody list EXACTLY what needs to be done to make this work, every part needed, and every method of labor. just so i know exactly what im getting into
also keep in mind my truck is four wheel drive, do i use my transfer case and driveshafts?

There are some guys out here on the west coast pushing 600-700hp on 518's with a good converter, good rebuild, and a steel planetary. With that you'll have the same amount in parts for the whole trans that you would with just a converter in a 47RH.
