Battery wiring problem

This weekend I went to start my 90 to find it completely dead. I found a short if one of the positive battery leads. I'm wondering what the lead could be for. It's one of two identical black wires that "T" out of the wireing harness just to the rear of the battery. I've ran the truck with this wire disconected and everything seems to work. Anyone know what these wires are for?

Thanks,
Brian

On my 93 the 2 extr black leads were fried at some point and in poor repair. before I fixed them right I would get a check engine light on and was having flikkering lights and volt meter at all times. I will asume 1 at least is for the charging system. I think there both fuseable link wires also. The other one I still dont know?
