ATF how many quarts.

I am servicing my A-727 transmission and I need to know how many quarts of Dexron III will it take to fill the system after it has been successfully flushed, 14-16 quarts?
1991 D-350 A-727
With optional Super Duty Transmission Cooler under the bed.

Thanks Jim

There is no clear answer, Jim.

Is it a stock pan? Is there a drain plug on the converter? Did you use it?

Now, how much did you drain out?

My transmission has been rebuilt once so there was a new converter installed but still no drain, and I have the axillary cooler under the bed.

I removed the cooler lines and flushed out the trans by pumping new fluid into the trans while watching to old fluid change colors, so far I have put 20 quarts through it and it is almost as clean as the fluid going in.

Probably another couple quarts and I will stop, I think the FSM says 8 quarts but I have been told 14-16 quarts by different trans shops.

I am going to get another 5 gallon pail today to finish it.

So far I have drained out 5 gallons and I am running out of places to put it so I will dump it back into the old pail now since it is now empty.

14-16 quarts sounds more like what it would take after a rebuild when the converter is dry. 8 quarts sounds reasonable. You could always flush/add a little and keep an eye on the dipstick.

I know it's a completely different transmission, but when I was working at a diesel shop in Mission Viejo and performing services on the Fords, they would take about 8-10 quarts.

How`d you pump the fluid through the system? I`ve been pondering this for awhile.
