Anyone haul truck campers?

I've been thinking about looking into a truck camper, that way i can tow my drag truck to the track and stay the weekend. Also it would be nice to throw it in the bed and take the family on road trips.

I searched for links with info on them like price and such, but there hard to find.

Also, how do they affect gas milage?

I have an 11 foot cabover camper. It was given to me, it was built in the early 70s and its not very aerodynamic. I think last time out running 75 pulling a trailer with my Rock crawler truck on it I got 10 MPGs.
You will like the camper, I use it for hunting trips and its like having a miniture home on your truck.
Good luck

I have a Palomino pop-up style cabover and like it. It has a stove, furnace, 3-way fridge, hot water heater, and an outside shower. The bed over the cab is about the size of a double, maybe a bit larger, and the table converts into another bed that is great for kids. Since it's a pop-up it doesn't kill the fuel mileage like a normal hard side camper does, but it isn't as well insulated and can be a hassle if you frequently move the truck since you have to raise and lower the top each time.

Check out http://www.rvtraderonline.com for listings. I also see them on eBay frequently.

I would love to get a pop yup for the back of my tacoma, just cant find a pop up that small. Even if i can find one that small they are way over priced. I think i might just get one for the dodge once it is fixed.

I dont recall your location from your sig but there are typically some good deals to be had this time of year on used stuff. New units are outrageous in pricing. Good/clean used units can be had from $2500 up easily.watch rhe old stuff cause they can get heavy from the type of construction, but then some of the new "hitech" stuff is pretty heavy also 1-2 tons. Ive been running the same OH camper on 3 trucks. #1 was my 93 250 2wd auto. Got 20 mpg empty with the 1500 LB camper it went down to 16/17, towing a 5K load with the camper it went to 13/14 on a stock truck with a rebuilt pump with some mods(15% xtra HP) or so. I would definatly reccoment a double trans cooler if its a auto. Rear end susp was fine although I had airbags, front is to soft IMO.Did good though. truck #2 93 350 dually 4x4 auto. couldent even tell it was there suspension wise, PITA loading cause of the duals, mileage was 18 empty 15 loaded. Now its on a 95 2500 4x4. Handles pretty good, a little swervy in the wind but the truck handles poorly as new,IMO. I actually think its better tracking with the load on it. Mileage is 18/19 empty and about 15 loaded.
If you go the used route check all the camper jacks and mounts for sturdyness, seems this is a leaky area and dryrot can set in making for some weak corners. electric jacks are great but pricy.
IMO you cant beat a camper, still can tow anything ya want.

You should be able to find a good deal on an older one because in 1988 Chevy went to a narrower bed, in 94 Dodge did and Ford changed somewhere around 94-97. So a lot of self contained older ones won't fit the newer trucks so have a limited market..The one I have is an 8ft self contained six pack, has a small shower, heater, refridgerator and toilet. Cost me $850 bucks a couple years ago. It weighs about 2000 lbs. I drive about 60 on the highway and get around 16mpg. I've gotten as good as 17.8 in Alaska with the 55 mph speed limit.

I like campers because it will pretty much go where ever the truck will. No worries about dragging trailer axles over rough roads or terrian. I do a lot of offroading with my Jeep. Having the camper on the back lets me tow the Jeep and I can get the camper fairly far back into the bush where we like to camp.

I hate campers cause they are a pain to load up, you cann't see behind you in your mirrors cause they stick out so far and they are cramped. No matter how big of a camper you get you are still limited to that 4" between the wheel wells.

Here's a pic of our camper from last summer in the Yukon on our way to Alaska. A diesel truck and camper is definetly the way to go up north. More manouvrable than a motorhome so you can random camp along the way a lot easier, fuel is expensive so diesel is good, easier to pass on tight windy roads, can still pull a hill at a decent speed, handles rough roads better. Did the trip with a Ford diesel truck/camper and a 26" motorhome with a gasser 460. If we weren't waiting for the motorhome to make it up the hill we were waiting for it to finish filling up or get tires repaired. Their fuel cost was typically twice what ours was.
