Any mud flap ideas for duallys
Any mud flap ideas for duallys
I was thinking about puttin mud flaps on my dually all the way around does any one have any ideas of where to get them or pics of what they made. Thanks Again, Dominic
Here are my mud flaps,
None of those fake I wanna be a real truck ones you get from Wal Mart but real honest to goodness rubber mud flaps same as the ones you will find on the big rigs, fire trucks and dump trucks.
Rather than going out and taking pictures of how they are installed, I used pictures in my library showing my mud flap hanger brackets in different stages of projects on my truck throughout the years.
I have literally thousands of pictures on my truck on my computer.

Here they are again from another angle.
Please excuse the dirt on the truck; it is at the car wash getting cleaned up as we look

Here we are at Detroit Auto Body having some repairs and repaint, they pulled off the fiberglass shell and the dually fender instead of just masking them.
That is what I like about my body shop, they go a little extra to ensure a satisfied customer, they could have just masked it off.

Here is the flip side see just how massive the Class-V hitch is, it stops them dead when they hit me.

Ok here is what you came for,
Here is how I made the hanger brackets to hold the mud flaps.
The bracket is made out of 1” square tubing, I do not remember the exact length but I could go and measure it if need be.
Anyhow at the frame side of the bracket I welded on a 1”X 2” tab through were it is bolted through an existing hole in the frame rail using 3/8”cad plated hardware including lock washer, flat washer and nut.
You can also see where I welded on a 1 ½” wide bracket extending down from the fender mounting bolt.
About the Mud Flaps,
I bought Rubber mud flaps from my local Heavy Duty Truck Parts, they had stacks of these and the plastic Anti-Sail ones but I like the rubber ones much better because they hang nicer.
The length you will cut them will be according to how high your truck sits, you can use the first picture to get an idea.
To cut them I laid them out on several pieces of thick cardboard and then using one mud flap lined side edge to side edge then use the bottom of the flap as a straight edge draw a line using a sharpie, now flip it over and then mark the other one.
BUT ..
Before you do this, measure your height, measure again, draw your line and then measure it one last time.
I used my 48” steel straight edge laid across the flap on the line and cut it using a utility knife with a new sharp blade, it took about 3 of 4 careful cuts and it cut just soft rubber butter.
To mount the flap you cannot see on the back side there is a 1/8” X 1” strip of aluminum between the bolt head, flat washer and the mud flap to help give a more even clamping pressure., here standard 3/8” X 2” plated hardware was used.

Here you can see more detail how I mounted the support bracket.

To see how I pay attention to every little detail, I installed 1” plastic caps to keep out any unwanted road debris

To show you just how strong my mud flap hanger brackets are,
When someone had recently torn off the fender, drivers side mirrors and broke my spotlight when they sideswiped my truck in a big delivery truck it only did slight damage to my hanger bracket, although it destroyed my fender.
The manager at Detroit Auto Body was again amazed at my work.

I hope this gives you a few ideas about how you can hang your mud flaps.
You could also mount the chrome strip across the bottom of the mud flap or the anti sail brackets if you wish.

If you have a habit of backing over things and tearing off the flaps, there's an old dump truck trick, you cut a slit from the bolt hole to the top of the flap. When it gets pulled out, the bolt just slides through the slit instead of ripping the top off the flap. Then you just unbolt the retaining strip and bolt it all back together.
