Between my dad, two brothers, and I we have 9 diesels and have accumilated more miles than my well intoxicated mind can fathem. We have never had a problem with good old Rotella. Its cheap and with millions of miles of satisfied customers it works for us. The only problem with keeping an oil in for an extended period of time is all engines sweat. Thus leaving moisture deposites in the oil. I know filtration catches most, but not all!!! How much do you love your bearings? I only us my dually to haul or tow. Probably sits 340 days a year. I change the oil once a year regaurdless of the miles. I cant and will not say anything bad about Amsoil. Other than the price. But for my family Rotella is all we will use.

After buying a 150K-mile truck from a 4th owner (who bought it from a 3rd owner kid) who never changed oil and filter for the last more than 30K miles through interstate highways with no overdrive because the drain plug was frozen - and after swapping the engine to my motorhome and having driven it for more than 4000 miles - the engine does NOT burn oil, it runs so strong and smooth. I'm using Rotella T5, but I think I will be changing oil and filter more regularly :-)

I use Rotella T5. It has a synthetic blend and I haven't had any problems. I change every 10K miles. Mind you I'm not doing cross country towing or nothing like that. This is my DD on base and the 90 mile each way trip home every weekend. But after reading that Amsoil can me good for a year at a time I do believe I'm be throwing that in in about 4k miles. Is that no BS? for a year at a time huh?

I think I went 30 or 31k miles on my last oil change on the ole dodge running the amsoil 5w-30 diesel synthetic with bypass. Not an issue... then again, I probably should have changed the filters a time or 2 but didn't... oh well, she still runs like a champ, and sounds TIGHT still, and fires instantly after sitting for weeks. Not like this dang ppumped motor in the ferd....

I meant do your research before making statements. It will save you the embarrassment of having to back pedal. I have used all types of oil (they are all good) and my research found Amsoil is the oldest synthetic company on the market they set the standards. They continue to make huge advances in the industry and all other companies ride on their coat tales. As far as cost goes again I encourage any one to do the math. The traditional 3 - 5,000 intervals verses a synthetic,by-pass and never change oil. It's like trying to explain to a person with a gas powered vehicle why diesel is better! Gas -3.65 @ gal. Diesel -4.05 @ gal. We understand but they don't. We all have our opinions and favored products but doing research and asking questions will determine which route we will take. Good Luck

Why is synthetic better than Rotella?

Just because it says synthetic does nto mean it is better.

Synthetics hold their viscosity better. Sorry if I spelled that wronge. Conventional oils start to break down at roughly 4000 miles. Synthetics can be run to roughly 10,000 miles with out worry. Rotella makes a full synthetic, synthetic blend and a conventional oil. It's more a question of Amsoil vs Rotella.

hey-Hey!!!,
I think I'll stick to Mobil 1 5W-40 synth. Mobil caught my attention back in the 70's with the intro of M1 and the write up in Scientific American. I ran M1 in my CBX's and nothing on 2 or 4 wheels is harder on its oil than Soichiro's kid; M1 kept is shifting smooth longest. The one-battery thing and MI winters leaves me liking the synth too. I didn't ever have to wait for the grid heaters and it fired quickly.
cheers,
Douglas

lol it's $1.299 a litre here... that's $4.92 a US gallon. And that's for diesel. Gas is something like $1.399 a litre right now. Well over $5 a gallon.

It's completely ridiculous. Last time it was this high was 3 years ago when crude costs were $125+ a barrel

I run amsoil full synthetic 15w40 in my motor with their filter which is like a 15 micron filter verses a fleetguard which is 25 micron. It will save you money in the long run since you can run it 15 to 25,000 miles. I've been impressed with it, first thing I noticed was how much cooler my engine temp ran and how fast my oil pressure comes up when I start it especially when its cold. We run amsoil in our sleds and other things and ill be switchin the rest of my drivetrain over to amsoil soon.
