Alternator gave up, finally
Well, I brought the 97 home a couple of weeks ago and have been spending money and time on it. It had a thermostat problem yesterday so I tore it down waiting on a thermostat. I have the 91 in great shape even though it has high mileage on it. Well, the thermostat for the 97 will not be in until tomorrow, so I jumped in the 91 to go to town. I start it up after the grids heat up and I smell something not quite right. "What is that? Smells like something BURNING!"
I popped the hood latch and jumped out to check on the engine compt. I thought the heaters might be burning something up. Didn't see anything, trucks running alright. Maybe it was just the weather or something (Denial is a terrible thing) I went to town and still smelled the smell when I got out. Took care of some business and got back in the truck. I noticed the voltmeter was down like the grids were on. This scared me thinking the truck would burn up before I could get back home.
At home, I checked with a voltage meter the grids. They were ok. 12V on one side of the relays, not on the other. Looked at the alternator and the smell was stronger on that side. Touched the alt. and it burned my finger. OUCH!
I immediately shut down and pulled the battery cable. I figured the alternator shorted internally and caused the problem. Anyway, I put another one on and fixed it for now. Just can't seem to get time without having to work on a truck.
Just rambling,
Chris

"DRIVE the truck!!"
That's true,,,I am getting tired of that stupid Chevy van and it's 7mpg 5.slow.
But I can't leave well enough alone so I end up tearin the trucks apart to "make them better" :-)
