Air conditioner help.

Guys I saw Jim Lane's thread on his A/C, didn't want to hijack it so I have my own ?'s.

I took my truck in to have the a/c worked on, because it was freezing up. Well the guy was supposed to have fixed it, but it still freezes up, along with he changed it over to 134a. The problem is it still freezes up....can someone tell how to solve this problem? Also would I be better off to go back to R12?

I want to get this a/c to cooling like it did from the factory, before summer gets here.

Thanks, Tony

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
It would help to know what the guy did.
I don't recall, does it have a aluminun block expansion valve?
By freezing up, do you mean it spits frost and eventually air flow out the vents is deminished greatly. Or does the engine compartment lines get ice on them. Do you have access to a set of gauges and someone who knows how to hook them up? Internet diagnostics are tough when you're blind.

sounds like the expansion block is not working or it has a leak if its low that will make it freeze up so will not enough air flow thru the evap. coil maybe it needs cleaned. you said he switched it to r-134a? i wonder if he changed the oil or just pumped it with freon, when changing types you should change the oil to the type freon you are using ie: 134a = pag oil
r-12 = mineroil. if he used r-414b you dont need to change oil
do you have a set of guages to hook up to see what pressures are at?
if the tag on truck says it holds 44 ozs of freon if you use r-134a you use 20% less than the sticker says. i run 134a in mine and it works fine comes down to 38 degrees.
was you there when the work was done?
maybe he did not draw a good vacuum on it there is many things it could be.
good luck also the little probe that sticks in the well on the suction line you can adjust how often it cycles on and off by sliding it in or out. does it ever cycle off? if not that will tell you something. let me know what you find out maybe i can help. dave

You're one of the lucky ones. I could only wish my AC was cold enough to freeze. I have bypassed my cycling switch trying to reach that point and still, my truck only gets down to 38f.

Maybe we could swap systems?

Yes, the lines get ice on them. If i let it stay on long enough it will start working again after it thaws.Do you have access to a set of gauges and someone who knows how to hook them up? No Internet diagnostics are tough when you're blind.
Thanks for all the help

38 degrees is not bad. i was going to pull the expansion block out and put a adjustable txv in its place. i will tell you one thing that really helps is i took a pressure control like what goes for a walk-in freezer to cycle compressor by pressure. take one of them and get a couple of ele. fans for radiator. mount them in front of condensor coil. connect a tee line to your high side a\c line
hook the pressure line from control to the tee then wire a heavy wire from battery with a fuse to one side of control there is 3 screws to connect to on pressure control 1 is common 1 is n\o and 1 is n\c you would hook up to com and n\o so when the pressure rises the switch will make and turn the fans on
i set mine to come on at 300 psi and they shut off at apx 250 psi but its great in traffic it stays cold cuz you keep air moving across the condensor coil also helps keep engine cooler too. i tryed one with just a temp sensor but
it will turn on if it gets hot outside and run the batt dead i know trust me.
but using a pressure control works like a dream and makes your air colder a little less stress on entire system.
