Adapting a NV4500 with a 2nd gen bell

Hi guys, I looked in the sticky and couldnt find exactly what I was looking for so I thought I would ask. I did a NV4500 swap last summer with a AA kit and love it. My dad did to so now we are getting ready for this swap in one of his trucks. He purchased a nv4500 with a second gen bell and fork on it. What else would be needed to do the swap with the 2nd gen bell? I thought I read that a 2nd gen starter and frame mods would be needed but I cant find it. Sorry if I looked over it. Can anyone who has done this swap please chime in? Thanks

Well i can tell you the adapter plate is different as well.

The 2nd gen and 1st gen starters mount different, they both have 3 bolt holes but the 2nd gen style has a bolt hole a little bit more outwards. So you will have a starter that bolts on with 2 bolts if you use the 2nd gen starter with the 1st gen Engine-bell adapter plate on there.

Engine - Adapter plate- Bellhouse - trans

That's the order it goes just to not get you confused....

I did not need to modify the frame when I swapped the a518 for a NV45. I went with 2nd gen plate, bellhousing and starter, hydraulics, that's about it. didn't put the neutral safety crap back on either.
while you're there, take a good look at your rear main seal.
are you putting in a new clutch as well? pilot bearing?

Yes a new Sachs kit has already been purchased. So for now he needs to buy:
1. 2nd gen adaptor plate
2. 2nd gen starter
3. 2nd gen clutch slave kit

Not to mention the tranny mount, 4x4 shifter bracket, and rod. But the big issue for my dad is that the frame doesnt have to be touched. Thanks for the info guys.

Is the 2nd gen clutch slave a direct swap in for a 1st gen? I mean no mods will need to be done to either the cab or slave kit? Thanks for everyones help.

When you use a 2nd gen bell is it still required to cut down the nv4500's bearing retainer? (the piece the release bearing rides on)

the only thing I had to do as far as the hydraulics go is to cut a small wedge out of wood for the reservoir to sit level against the engine bay side of the firewall.

I did not have to cut anything around the bearing retainer or anywhere else for that matter: seems to me that if you go with 2nd gen. parts throughout, then you're fine. But keep asking questions!

I have done the AA setup and the complete 2nd gen as well. I would go the AA way before the other. I converted from auto to 5 speed using the 2nd gen stuff. The frame had to be notched for starter clearance. Everything else bolted right in.

440 why did you have to notch the frame and Bullit didnt? Now I am confused. The truck he plans on doing this to is an auto 4x4. Does it matter if the trucks an auto or a 5spd to start with? How much did you have to cut away? Thanks

I assume because the AA kit allows you to use the 1st gen starter, and doing using the 2nd gen stuff, you have to use the 2nd gen starter.

I did not notch the frame and I did not use any AA parts. It is pretty darn tight against the frame though. In retrospect the AA solution is overall easier.
