A-518 transmission concerns
A-518 transmission concerns
Got a non lock up A-518 that i am starting to have some concerns with. First off the transmisson burnt up back in august and i got it re-built in september by a transmision shop. The concerns i am having with it is its making some noises, not really a buzzing noise nd not really a whining noise. When i put it in drive doesnt matter if its cold or fully warmed it up it will go wooooooooow and it gets louder with speed, but its only noticeable at slower normal driving. If i get on it i cant hear it making any noises but it also makes this noise while ts in reverse. Its most noticeable in first gear and reverse and it gets louder with speed. I have checked the fluid level multiple times and its full the transmission fluid does not smell burnt and it is still bright pink in color. This noise doesnt seem to be affecting the way it performs the transmission still shifts good although it shifts a little softer then i'd prefer but i think that is due to the line pressure being set at factory spec. When it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd its a little soft. My re-build came with all new gears and a new front pump and a new converter. The transmission does not make this noise while is in park or nuetral so tht rules out the pump and the converter. Has anyone else expirenced this before with the early A-518's? is it a probelm in the valve body? do i have a servo sticking? or is it a problem in the valve body? would a re-built valve body most likey solve this? or would a shift kit being installed solve it? My transmission is still under warranty for another year and a half so i'd like to throw some idea's at the transmission shop when i bring it back to them for them to look at. I'm going to demand they fix it under the warranty i just want to have some good idea's to throw at them as to what could be causing it so they dont try to tell me thats nothings wrong with it.
Mine started makin a similar noise just this last week. I notice it at the upper rpm range in all gears and once in OD the entire time its running down the road. I have tried to figure out where the noice is coming from but no luck. Mine hasnt been rebuilt, has about 200k on it and shifts great and runs great. The noise just started out of nowhere one day getting on the highway. I think i can slightly hear it in reverse when standing still but i dont hear anything at low speeds. Mostly just from the time it shifts into OD on up. Guess I'll just drive it till it fails.
brandon they shouldn't make a noise period. mine never has in my challenger and ive had multiple engine combinations behind it and abused it to no end without a problem. same case with my truck, trans makes no noises.
Ya i agree it shouldnt be making any noise, and chrislib the noise seems to get louder with road speed. I'll put it in drive and start to take off and it goes woooooooooooow and its louder as speed increases and then when it shifts into second the noise will die down and slowly start getting loud with speed it will slowly start going wooooooooooow with speed. And i cant hear the noise while i get on it i can only hear the noise durning normal driving.
It's confusing me because the fluid level is full and the fluid doess not smell burnt and it is still bright pink. It's still shifting good not slipping all tho it is shifting softer then i'd prefer but i plan on turning up the line pressure a little bit when i drop the pan soon. I want to get a shift kit installed soon too and i will. But this noise it is making does not seem to be messing with the transmissions performance. If i had to take a wild guess i'd have to guess this probelm is in the valve body somehwere and maybe getting a shift kit put in will eliminate it?

i'd say its a planetary set getting wore. Thats the only thing i can think of thats in the trans, that would make the noise, that or like Brandon said the pumps wore causing it. Mopar does yours do it in D 1st or Man. 1st?
I dont think its the plenatarie gears. Reason being is the plenatarie gears got replaced when the transmission was re-built. I got charged for new plenatarie gears anyways..... And i think that would be awfully ballasy to re-build a transmission and charge somone for new plenatarie gears and not give them new gears and re-use the old ones. I just dont think the worst shop on the planet would even do that but i could be wrong.... What i think it is and something i over looked big time is the flex plate. If the flex plate is cracked or rubbing on the converter amd not tight that can cause quite a few different noises, at least i'm told. I was talking to a guy who said his transmission was doing the exact same thing after he re-built it and it turned out being the flex plate. Makes sense to me cause after the transmission sho re-built my transmission and i picked it up it was quiet didnt make any noises at all. Then i wanted a different converter a couple weeks later and i took it back to them and ever since the pulled it out to put a different converter on it and then put it back together is when i started to notice this noise. In fact i noticed the second i pulled out of there parking lot after they had put the different converter on it but i had 15 minutes to get my kid from school so i just kept going. But after that was mentioned to me it makes sense because if it was worn plenatarie gears it would have been making noise right off the batn and it didnt it ws quiet and sounded normal the very first time they re-built it, this noise came about aftern they tore it out the second timee to put in a different converter. So thats why i have a hard time believing its the plenatarie gears, plus when plenatarie gears are going out they tend to make noise in only 1 gear. I'm getting this same wooooooow noise in first second and reverse i dont know if its doing it in third or fourth because im normally going to fast to hear it in those gears.
So we've gone around the mulberry bush for 5 days because of one field engineering principle that was forgotten, or ignored. It was the hardest thing I had to teach computer field engineers when I was training them.
1. You walk up to a running machine.
2. You do something to it.
3. It now doesn't run, or does something else goofy.
It is always what you did to it.

Either the flex plate is bad, or the torque converter is bad, or something is not properly aligned, ie alignment roll pins distorted on the transmission case.
Noise is likely the front pump or bearings getting hammered. The longer you run it that way, the worse the damage will be.

Ya i hear ya j martin, problem is i am at work right now out of state and i wont have a day off for another 10 days or so. I know its important to et the truck back to the transmission shop and i will. Its still under warranty so if they wanna try and screw me over i'll just take em to court, but i dont think they will, they have fixed everything else they messed up on. Do i think they will be happy to seem me? ehh probly not because they hvave had to take this transmission out a couple different times but if they want to honor there warranty then they have too. I'll just tell em its making this noise and its scaring me. Guess they will have to take a close look at it and take it out and replace all possible sources thats the only way i see it getting fixed. Its not my job to fix it thats what warrantys are for right? I kinda feel bad when i shop up with a problem for them to solve but at same time i paid 2400 bucks cash for this re-build so i deserve a properly working transmission thats a chunk of change for a transmission.
what i'm saying is i hope they dont give me any BS about fixing it. But legally they cant, when you offer a warranty you have to follow thru on it. And this started happening after the pulled it out to put a different converter on it. so whatever it is happened from pulling the transmission and putting it back in.
