Re:4x4 Front Axle Problem

Hey I went to go buy the socket for my front end and they tried to sell me a six point socket like the one you use for the rear end. As I have not taken appart the front end I do not know what the nut looks like. I said I wanted the socket with the 4 dogs like you all said to get and the parts guys said that socket was for a ford Dana 60 only. You wouldn't think there would be a difference between a Fixed Or Repaired Daily and a DODGE dana 60 or is there?

Re:4x4 Front Axle Problem

Good quesstion. My 79 Ford with a Dana 60 front takes a socket with the 6 pins on it. I would think the Dodge 60 would be the same. I cant say for sure. I just bought a 92 4WD so Im curious to know myself but I own both sockets. You could pull the hub and see without jacking the truck up. just pull the 6 allen screws out and see.
good luck.

Re:4x4 Front Axle Problem

Sounds like I'll get the 4 dog socket next time I'm in town, at a different parts store this time. I have never got a part from this parts store that was right the first time. I don't think they know what they are talking about. Thanks again guys.

On my 90w350, it took the hex type 1 5/8", no dogs. See if they'll order both, then take yours apart to see which you need to pay for. If Auto zone can get it, they'll usually sell you the tool as security deposit, then when you bring it back, they'll return the money with the receipt. I'm sure you'd have to buy their parts though.

Re:4x4 Front Axle Problem

Okay, hopefully this will settle it. I went out to the storage unit and got my socket. It's made by Performance Tool and the number is W83010. The outside diameter is 2 9/16" and it's about 3" deep. I bought it at Napa, but who knows if all Napas thru out the country carry PT W83010. Yes, it has 4 dogs/cogs.
AFAIK, Dodge wheel bearing lock nuts have used the 4-dog sockets for years - except during the unfortunate full-time era. The '69 PW I had with a Dana 44, closed knuckle, drum brake, front diff. used the 4-dog socket - only it was a smaller diameter.

I hope this helps , Chris

Re:4x4 Front Axle Problem

I am pretty sure that the '91.5 & up front axles with the "internal" or "chevy" style locking hubs use the round nuts with holes, while the earlier Dana 60 front ends with the "external" locking hubs use the same size hex nuts as the rear . . . But, I have never had one of those axles with the external hubs . . .

Re:4x4 Front Axle Problem

Chris,

We spend Thanksgiving week with friends in Graeagle. This will be our 18th year. I'd love to live up there but we would starve. :'( We're supposed to leave the Bay Area at 1pm on Friday. I may wait until Saturday morning.

Where do you work in Truckee?
