4x4 conversion with coil springs?
Earlier today I went to look at a broken 4x4 dually 93 le extended cab that could be had for 2k, possibly less. Front driveshaft pole vaulted on the freeway. Dented floor, pinched exhaust shut, and broke the transmission case(NV4500). It would also need some body work, paint, and possibly a new bed.
I currently have a 2wd dually 92 le extended cab getrag 3.07. I would love to have 4x4. While debating buying this truck this idea came to my mind. The 7.3 powerstroke guys swap their 2wd to 4x4 using 05+ axles with coils.
What is stopping me from using a 2nd gen front axle with coils and getting a transfer case to match so the drive line is on the correct side? I would have to buy a transfer case, the transmission adapter and mainshaft anyway. Does it matter which side it drops to? As long as it matches the front axle right? Or will the clutch hydraulics be in the way?
I would also have to add the 2nd gen mounts too. Would it be worth it? Or would the leaf spring swap be just as easy? Is it absolutely necessary to change the engine crossmember? Or will unbolting the lower control arms be sufficient?

That is a very nice project. I saw he made his own spring mounts. Can the factory 2wd 1st gen coil mounts be used? Is there any significant difference in springs?
