47RE questions

Ok, has anyone ever swapped one into a 1st gen, and what did it take to make it all work, or should I forget the idea all together

good question. Probably has to do with the electronic control part of the deal.

I have a good 518 in the truck now, but with a weak convertor, picked up the RE with low miles, for a good price. I have changed VBs before, but have no clue on whats involved with changing the OD unit out. How big of a pain is it to do, will it unbolt from the main case, or do you have to take the whole trans apart to do it??

JD730 would know.

It would be nice to have another alternative to a 47RH. There are lot's more 47RE's around. Even some 3rd gens came with them.

manual valve body, or a stand alone controller. Either option is typically a deal breaker on a 1st gen due to cost.

The trans I'm running in the truck right now started out life as a 1996 47RE. Like TXS said, you need a valve body, OD piston retainer. You can switch the whole overdrive unit or swap the guts around, which is what I did.

Don't forget you need a spacer to bolt a NP205 to a 47RE.

You need a spacer if you run a full out 47RE with the RE overdrive unit, if you put a 518 OD unit on it you are making a 47RH.

Ok, that makes more sense. Now, if I were to use the 518 OD, and valve body, how would I go about controlling the lockup? or would I need the VB off of a RH to do that?

yeah I will just toggle it, but first I have to get to that point lol.

Ok, so next question? What can I use the VB out of, other than a 47rh from a diesel? Will one from a gasser v-8 work? And if so does it need to be modified in any way to make it work right?

What a pain, wish I had the money to just have a good RH built, and not have to piece and parts this one together
